I read with disbelief the recent posts about the Players Championship potentially becoming the fifth major.
Firstly, why would we need another major championship? The USPGA seems to be only grudgingly accepted as a major so why add another?
Secondly, if you are going to elevate a tournament to major status why would would it be another tournament based in the USA? Surely the benefit to golf worldwide of holding a major outside of the USA and Europe would be immense. There are wonderful courses in South Africa, Australia and Asia that could hold such tournaments and these countries have a tremendous reputation for hosting major sporting events. After all where's the biggest growth market for golf? Yup, China. The Mission Hills resort in Shenzen province has 10 18 hole courses designed by Ernie, Olazabal, Sorrenstam, Faldo, Vijay, Norman, Duval, Oazki and Leadbetter.
Time for some PGA execs to wake up and smell some coffee, me thinks the cash cow might run out of milk.
