  • Get in the Hole

Why oh why do the american galleries insist on this crazy notion we need them shouting this rediculous quote every time somebody (American of course) putts.
Golf is the last sport were WE actually tell referees or opponents that we MADE fouls. Fair plat and honesty go with the game so the galleries should respect what the golfers practice.

      Re: Get in the Hole

I find it most amusing when they scream it when a player tees off on a par 5.

Our transatlantic cousins simply have a different way of looking at things. It's the price to pay for the mass media acceptance of the sport. It's also one of the few downsides to the boom in popularity. The 16th at Phoenix (I think thats the hole, the par 3 with the nutcase crowd, isn't it?) is a prime example.

It is a shame that they rarely say it for non US players although they probably do for Ernie and Vijay but thats just cos they are kind of honorary americans in the fans eyes, due to the fact they are successful.

What I think we would all like to see is the course stewards taking a tougher line with hecklers, those knuckle dragging beer swilling wife beating a-holes that made playing in the States such a trial for Monty for so many years. They have moved on to Paul Casey now it seems, granted its his own fault for being so stupid as to say something like what he said out loud in the vicinity of a tape recorder.

There is a simple answer to the question: American's have a culture unique to themselves. Don't try to understand them or their culture.

Been there, done that and experienced it. We had our share of it too, even on our level of mini-tour. It irritated the CR*P out of me, it really did but if you play in America - live with it.

And I suddenly feel very out of place.

You can't generalize everyone here who screams after they've hit their drives, and so on. I play a lot of golf and the worst case I have ever experienced was someone who would laugh really loud afterwards

Well, as a Canuck who's been fed American culture his whole life, I must admit I talk to my ball while it's moving.

I'll encourage it to get in the hole, to stay up, to get down, to go, to stop, and a myriad of other things.

I'll talk to myself and the ball the whole round, if someone doesn't stop me.

                Re: Get in the Hole

Ben, it's completely different when you are trying to 'guide' your own ball after the hit, but for the galleries to be screaming "You da Man," on the tee box or "get in the hole!" on the green as soon as the player makes contact I think is rediculous! If they feel the need to be like that, they should go watch football or NASCAR.

Yes, that is ridiculous - and I agree, it's annoying, as it happens every time.

That's why I like watching the Nationwide Tour - none of that garbage.

                    Re: Get in the Hole

It's funny - it's usually always only 1 person doing the screaming. I think it's teh same guy that goes around from tourney to tourney making an ass of himself at each venue!

I agree that it's annoying and something that isn't needed. Have some respect for the game, the heritage and the players. This isn't a team sport or players are going head to head against each other (except match play) - it's the player vs the course and they deserve some respect.

I must agree....It is no surprise that over here in America we do things that are different than in other places. But that is what makes the world go round. Would you want everyone to act the same way,do the samething. NO...That would be boring... Each culture does things their own way. It is neither wrong nor right. Do you hear the pros complain about someone yelling "get in the hole" after the swing or stroke? Granted the fan saying it may very well be half in the bag OR they can be routing for their favorite player wanting them to do well. Is there anything wrong with that? Yes I agree it can get out of hand at times. Now never being over in Europe...I would not be surprise that the fans over there react differently than the fans over here when it comes to football, hockey and other sporting events. Its your customs, your culture, your tradition...nothing wrong with it....just different..We might think you are "crazy"..just as you think that we are......

Hehe... if you get on Americans for their golfers, they'll get on Europeans for their football hooligans.

Canadian fans are the best behaved (at a football match), but it must be because we're either polite, or disinterested. (Canada, as you can tell, doesn't have a very strong soccer program - in fact, the only sport we do wel at is hockey).
