Re: How good can you get?

    Hi Bigman,

Goal for 2006 is single figures and represent zone in country week pennant (got the invite to try out). Currently off 14. Not too bad since I work, have two toddlers and a husband to care for.

Re: How good can you get?

There are a lot of people hoping to shave alot of strokes off there handicap this year. Maybe i'm aiming to low. Went from 28 the 15.6 last year maybe I should be aiming for single figures and not 12. Has anyone else dropped from 15 or so into single figures in one year?? I practice everyday. Nobody practices more than me!!

Re: How good can you get?

        Hi Daz,

Of course it's possible but you have not only got to break your personal record you will need to break the 80 barrier which is not easy mentally.

Hitting the ball wise I would say no problem, if you can keep it together for the last few holes is another matter.

I don't want to dampen your dreams, so remember when you are on for that 80 barrier (YOUR ONLY IN THIS POSITION BECAUSE YOU ARE PLAYING WELL)

        Good Luck

        Ian.

p.s it took me a year to get from 12 to 9

          Hi Ian,

I know what you mean about mental Barriers. Breaking 90 was a hugh problem for me. It seamed that i was hitting 90s and 91s every week but I new I had added a handful of shot due to stressing. the day I actually broke 90 i shot a an 81. I new by about the 6th I was gonna break 90 and I just relaxed, giggled like a child all the way round and enjoyed the game. I'm trying not to think about 80 as a milestone like i did with 90.

Re: How good can you get?

Well, you can certainly aim for a handicap of 8. That would mean that you are still of a single handicap and that you dont have to shoot under 80

I certainly had a bit of a mental barrier once I reached 9. It was always that last couple of holes that did the damage. The thing is, once you get into that situation enough, you eventually do get used to it and then breaking 80 was ok from then on.

Re: How good can you get?

Breaking 80's, recently read that rather than thinking of the full 18 holes and putting pressure on yourself the last few try and break the 18 into 3 sets of 6 holes. The aritcle suggested a goal of 26 strokes per 6 holes. At this stage I'm thinking 27 per 6 holes?

Season 2006 - outdoors starts in May and ends in October - 6 months.

My goal is to shoot under 80 - at least one or two times. My current hdc is 47 - so I just need to get rid of the first digit.

I will play 100 times 18 holes next summer and try to be in more than 10 competitions. (Every second week).

What are you going to to for the other 80 days?

                  (6months*30days=180days)

Re: How good can you get?

For the other 80 days I will probably just visit the range:-)
(Well, I am just under 50 and married. Kids are almost all moved away from home - so I might stay home, if the weather is bad.)

And it is also possible to play 36 holes a day - so the goal is not very high - just 100 times 18 holes. I just read about people that play over 200 rounds. I am afraid that my physics might not be good enough. My hands hurt after 2 or 3 weeks of playing every day - joints in the fingers don't like the impact. So 100 is a good starter for me.

(I live in a walking distance of a golf course so I can play a round in the morning and still get something done during the day.)

I've been looking around for help in that area too. I came across an australian website www.golf-school-australia.com, that claims to teach their students lower golf scores in record time, and talks about consistency and stuff.

Then I see that the Director, Lawrie Monatgue, coached this young Korean High School girl, who could hardly speak English. She's been playing since she was 10, and pretty average. Well, just over twelve months of coaching at Australian High Performance Golf Academy, she enters the Australian Ladies Masters (her second professioanl tournament) as an amateur, and competes against some of the top women professionals in the world, and walks away with the trophy! If that's not loer scores in record time, then I'll eat my shirt.

Anyway, the website offers 11 free lessons to improve my golf swing, so I've signed up, and I've only got two lessons so far, but they seem fantastic. So go and have a look at www.golf-school-australia.com and check out the lessons.

Re: How good can you get?

                        Great thread!

I suppose I am luckier than many here in that I can play all year round, unless a typhoon is blowing by somewhere and the wind and rain (not to mention lightning) prevent my almost overwhelming urge to hit golf balls from taking hold. I love golf but am not willing to risk a Manila thunderstorm while waving a stick in the air.

That said, my journey is a long one indeed. I started in the consistent 150’s two years ago, replete with some of the most disastrous golf holes in memory. I used to consider a flirt with 130 a major accomplishment. 140 was at that time the "neutral zone," in other words “things aren’t getting worse.”

My nickname with the guys is still “water boy” hearkening to an Adam Sandler character apparently. I still shudder in the thought of those double-digit monster holes of yore. I still have a hole (a single hole!) that is a higher stroke count than one of my friend’s entire front nine score. That one got batted around for months my first year in, with the added bonus of being the highest golf score in the history of the group, which is only three years old. I’ll spare you the numerical details.

Daz, you’re and inspiration for me. You say back a few posts ago that you were at 28 and want to get to lower than 12. I just got to about 32 in recent rounds, finally occasionally getting in under 100 on the score card. Two years to get there, and I almost screwed it up on the last three holes for the very reasons many people have discussed above.

Given that I am still the caboose in our golfing group of 18, I would like to clip numbers 17 and 16 by year’s end (for us teachers that is June when we all run off to our various countries to hang out with family). They are shooting in the 22-24 range as of our last major. Given that they probably have goals of their own, namely keeping me where I am, I have my work cut out for me.

I played with a supportive friend in the group just last week. At about hole 13 he said that my swing has really improved a lot. When I thought about it, I realized he was right. I feel a lot more controlled most of the time when I am swinging on the course. He still shot an 82 to my 102, but that is a big difference from 142.

I feel so close to turning a corner, and with some new clubs in the bag, I hope that leads to more confidence and better scores as well. Our next two-day major is in three weeks. I imploded in the second round of our last major 2 months ago and shot a 130 thus re-securing my 18th spot yet again and then getting drunk.

I hope to definitely improve on that at least for this coming tournament.

                        Cheers!

I'm definitely gonna be single figure by the end of the year.

                              O.K Gents,

It's March 2006 and it's time to assess where we are at in attaining goals set earlier on.

                              Well mine, I'm still 14 (13.5).

I have been attending courtry week teams pennant training. Can't play this year because I'm off for a girls week in Hawaii. Still training with the team to build rapport and so on.

More importantly, I've recently fixed my down swing. I've found a key that works and now I'm ingraining it, ie, my game can only get better.

                              What about you?

my main ambition for this year is to become a member of a club and get an official handicap which has been out of my reach financially until a recent windfall! other than that just want to improve my game. at some time ive hit great drives, irons, pitches, chips and putts now got to try and do that in the same round!! LOL
