    iron lie / shaft length Q

    My first post.... be gentle!


    I recently purchased a set of used Ping Zings, Orange Dot (-2 degrees, -0.25" shafts). Knowing my lie is +2, upright, +0.25" shafts, the price was such I could not pass up. They're mint condition...paid $75. Anyways.... Ping will change the lie to Green Dot (+2 degrees, upright) for 18.00, but want 10.25/club (8 clubs) to add a half inch extension to each shaft. So, if I could forgo the shaft extensions & just get the lie changed I'm talking 18.00 instead of 118.00.


    <b> Does the half inch justify the 100.00 or could I "get by" with just the lie change?</b>


    For a lil background, I'm a par-bogey golfer....

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

    I don't think you need the extensions, personally. The half inch shorter may have the clubs playing a little stiffer, unless they came from the factory that way.

    The reason it's 10.50/club is to cover the costs of the extensions and new grips. If you were going to regrip the clubs anyway, you might as well get Ping to put the extensions in.

    Grips are anywhere from 2.50 to 5.00, and extensions are ~ $2.50. SO it's a not bad relationship of 1:1 Parts:Labour.

    You'll probably see a 5-7 yard distance loss without the extensions.

      I don't know if you can get by with the half inch difference or not. Here is what I'm guessing you'll get with your 10.25 per club. An extension which is probably 1.00 a club and new grips as they will cut off the current grips to put the extension in and regrip them. For a nice Lamkin grip your looking at roughly 2 dollars a grip.

      You could save some money doing it yourself or getting someone local to do it.

      GolfWorks has extensions for 1.75, and they appear to do 2 clubs each and lamkin grips for 1.90. So I see $22-$23 for supplies. I don't know what a person would charge for doing this. But I don't see it beeing $90.

      You could buy them try them for a while and then have it done by someone else if you need the change.

        I wouldnt worry too much about the shorter shafts, youll get a bit more control and maybe lose all of 5 yards a club.

        Have you tried them at the -2° loft? you may find it makes little difference.

        Unless you are half human-half giant sequoia i would avoid going to +2° as well get them adjusted to black dot (standard) instead.

          $118 seems reasonable for a shop price - I do club repairs out of my garage and I would probably charge about $75 for grips and extensions. a 1/2 inch difference isn't that much - you won't notice any change in distance with that little amount of change. You probably won't notice that they are 1/2 inch too short. I would wait until you need your grips changed to add extensions.

          As for +2* compared to -2*, if you have noticed that you are taking a heel divot, than yes get them adjusted to what matches you. If you are taking normal divots, leave them at -2*.
