  • Scoring in competitions

In yesterday's Stableford out of 100 players, one guy got 39 and another one got 37.

So that's 2% of players scoring better than their handicap. Everybody else got less than 36.

The wind was moderate and the greens were good.

How does this scoring compare with other clubs ?

This happens week in, week out as well.

Yea that sounds about right. Usually anything between 34 and 38 is on handicap. If you do better you will get cut if you do worse you will go up 0.1 depending on standard scratch.

If you shoot par for your handicap then you would really only score 36 points anyway. You can do worse score wise but still score ok because the worst you can do is a double bogey which is zero. But a 12 is still zero points and if you get a couple of good holes, maybe birdie-ing on a stroking hole for a net eagle and 4 points you can still score 36 points. Thats what saves you in ordinary stroke play when you have one nightmare hole and 17 decent ones. You might still score 3 or 4 outside the buffer zone but your stableford score saves you. Thats why if you score a 7 or 8 or worse you should still try to score well the rest of the day cos you may save your handicap or even still get cut if the other 17 are good enough.

The whole thing was brought in to stop bandits that play off 15 shooting 75 for 17 holes but "accidentaly" taking a 12 to get their score back to handicap levels.

My clubs alooott easier than yours i guarentee (only bout 6000 yards, pretty open course). but if there is wind around here 36 will do the job. Otherwise you need closer to 42, 43 to win. I scored 44 on Wednesday and came 2nd.

The par is 70 and SSS is 68 so members should shoot around 38. I'd prefer to play a course where par is a good score, i love goin to opens at other courses and actually startin a round knowing i have all my strokes.

Our course is only 6,250 yards and is a par 70.

Currently though we have a very shortened 18th because they are working on a new tee. It's still classed as a par 4 but it's only about 200 yards so everybody can reach.

So it is baffling why the scoring is so bad. We seem to be getting these US Open style pin position at the moment ( 4feet from the back left on a slope etc) which doesn't make scoring easy.
