  • older clubs in your bag

Here's a good question for all of you:

How many of your 14 clubs that you use regularily in comp have you had in your bag for 5 years or more? Just interesting to see how many of us feel the need to constantly update our equipment.

Weeeeeeellll, I've just started out, and upgraded from starter shovels, so all my sticks (and bag) are new, and most are custom made.

To answer my own question, all my clubs, except my 3W (this year) and my putter (4 years old) are over 5 years old. My current irons were manufactured in the mid 80's, my driver is from the mid 90's and I bought both my Cleveland wedges in 2000. But, only my wedges have been in my bag for the last 5 years. Everything else I have aquired via trade or a pruchase off eBay. All my friends have always said, "imagine what Gord could do with new technology." Well, I have finally got a brand new club (Ashton X-1 3 Wood) and I can't believe the difference it makes. I just ordered the Ashton MS-5 driver and it should be at my door step in a couple weeks. Next year I am going to make a set of Snake Eyes combo irons (600 B/C/XC). I have worked hard on my game with my current set of adequate clubs, now it's time to reward my hard work.

I have 3 clubs that are older than 5 years. My 3,5 woods and a left-handed 4 wood for when I can't hit it right handed. I don't hit my fairway woods very often is probably the reason I haven't updated them.

They're about 10 years old. The left handed 4 wood is probably closer to 25 years old.

If I can find some cash to buy some new wedges I'll probably dump the 5 and 4 woods out of the bag.

Most of my clubs are less than 3 years old except for my putter and lob wedge. The putter I use is a bronty rustler which is around 10 years and my lob wedge is an old pinsplitter which is around 15 years old. I feel the most comfortable with these as I have used then for such a long time.

I have tried other clubs but prefer the "feel" of both of these.

All the clubs in my bag are less than 5 years old, but the putter I've used for the last 7 years was made in the late 70's

I just bought a new set but my old set was bought in 1973. Thought I never played until recently, I've been hitting the clubs for 14 years.

I have one club in my bag that is over ten years old. It is my Taylor Made utility wood "Attack" with the bubble shaft. I have found nothing better for hitting out of long rough than this club. A full hit goes around 190 yards, I have choked down on it at times and punched it 100 yards or less out of the spinach.

Re: older clubs in your bag

I addicted to looking at golf equipment. Today I demo'd a Callaway X460 with a regular Callaway shaft. Don't ever think a new driver means it's better. I have a Mizuno MP-001 400cc w/ reg shaft and I can't believe the difference. The Callaway's "reg" shaft was so soft I couldn't get the head to go where it should. I had no luck with it at all. I might try the stiff shaft version.

All I can say is you must test out anything new before you fall for the hype. It's mostly BS.

My Driver and 3 wood have been in the bag for more than 5 years. At least the Driver model has, the current one is a replacement I first got back in 1998. The current Driver is 3 years old but still a Taylor Made 300.

Re: older clubs in your bag

I've only been playing for 3 years, but I can think of a couple of clubs that are very likely to stay in my bag for the next couple of years.

One is my Wilson Deep Red 5 wood - stiff flex fatshaft Graphalloy shaft. I hit it just short of 200 yards with a beautiful, high trajectory, and it just makes the sweetest sound.

Another is my Nike TW Lob Wedge. Deadly inside appx 50 yards, and brilliant when lobbing over greenside bunkers or the like.

Last on the list is my Cleveland Halo 3i hybrid. Talk about easy to hit. Gives me great confidence in difficult lies and offers a "calm swing - long distance" weapon as a contrast to an agressive long iron swing.

Those three have delivered the goods on so many occasions, that I can't really imagine replacing them - unless they break (knock on wood).
