  • Advice Please Guys

A mate of mine is having some swing problems at the moment (let's just call it the dreaded sideways shot) and has a weighted ring that he's using on the range to help him complete his swing. What we want to know is can he take that ring out on the course and swing the club with it on between shots obviously taking it off before he plays his "proper" shots.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Steve,
To be totally honest I'm not 100% sure if he can..............but I would like to make a point if thats ok.....

I suggest that your friend doesn't take any teaching aid onto the course with him/her ever simply because you need to have the mind set that the two are completley different situations.......

The range is for practicing improvement with as many training aids as you like, or lessons etc.....

The course is a place to play and enjoy the game not matter how good or bad you play, you should never confuse the two or it will become a habit to think to much while on the course.

Forget all teaching practices once you arrive 0on the car park, just let yourself go and play.

    Hope this helps

    Ian.

      Thanks Ian,

I wasn't a 100% sure myself. I've tried suggesting that he should "just go and play" when on the course. I reckon he's thinking too much before he plays.

        From the R&A Rules (2004):

14-3. Artificial Devices and Unusual Equipment

During a stipulated round the player must ont use any artificial device or unusual equipment:

        That might assist him in making a stroke or in his play;

I think the doughnut qualifies here, as it helps his swing.

The penalty under R&A rules is disqualification.

For the record, stipulated round is defined as "playing the holes of the course in their correct sequence. The number of holes in a stipulated round is 18.

So for any 18 hole round, the doughnut needs to be left at home.

Hmm. This is a tricky question. As far as I know, it is permissible to use a weighted club, such as the "Momentus", when playing on the course.

I don't see why the weighted doughnut, between swings, should be a breach of rule 14-3. The device is not being used as an aid to the swing, whilst playing a shot. One could argue that it is purely being used to keep the muscles loose.

This is quite simple one actually.

He can use anything he likes during the round provided that the device is removed before he plays a stroke. He cannot delay play unduly either by using the device.

Also, consider this: provided that it's not a competitive round, why not let your mate improve and enjoy his game if it helps him? It's not going to make that big of a difference to you is it?

I let my mate use a wrist brace while we play to prevent his wrists from pivoting incorrectly. He's loving the game again and we are enjoying the time we spend together ... What the hell, it's a game between friends for a few bucks.

              Decision 14-3/10
              Q. During a round, may a player make a stroke or a practice swing using a club with a weighted headcover or "doughnut” on it, or use any other device designed as a training or swing aid?

              A. No – but see Decision 4-4a/7.

              Decision 4-4a/7
              Q. May a player carry a weighted training club in addition to the 14 clubs selected for the round?

              A. No, but a weighted training club may be selected as one of 14 clubs carried by a player, provided it conforms with Rule 4-1. Rule 4 does not regulate the weight of the golf club.
