  • Custom Fit Clubs

I got fitted for Ping G2 irons, the fitter said that I should be using a "2 degree up" club set. So far I have found that I am consistently hitting my irons to the right and definetly not getting the distance I used to get with my clones. I was hitting a PW consistently 150 yds. I tried to hit a 9 iron the other day and it didn't even make it to a 100 yds and I thought I hit the club rather well.

What does that mean "2 degrees up"? Could this be the reason all my irons go to the right?

    Re: Custom Fit Clubs

    Hi Nanabush,

Two Degrees Upright means that you are around two inches taller than mister average, they bend the heads to sit almost flat on the turf, obviously if your very short then they would need bending (1/2/3 degrees Flat) if your tall then (1/2/3 degrees Upright).

This should improve you shot making and improve your golf, however I suspect a little impatients has a hand in this......they are new take some time to get to know them, spend some time at the range, light grip and relax......swing easy and get used to them.

If they have been fitted with the right shafts and lofts & lie you should have no worries, they are also great clubs.

Hmmmm, Ian I'm not sure about what you think but I'd say get yourself through another set of fittings. Something doesn't sound right here ...

This is a problem I see SO often its frightening. Fittings should be done over 3 or 4 sessions because during a single session the "buzz" of fitting and trying to fit affects the swing results.

If you've lost that much distance and direction - definately get yourself "redone".

Losing shots to the right and less distance. Easy - the shafts are stiffer than what you are used to. This is a common result for people who upgrade to a stiffer shaft. I would approach the fitter and ask if you could get a lighter flex in your shafts.

When you go back for your fittings, SWING EASY. My guess is that you were absolutely ripping at the ball and the stiffer shafts wre what suited you. As you get out to the course or range, you cann ot keep that swing speed up and as you slowed down to a manageble pace the shafts were now too stiff.

          Re: Custom Fit Clubs

To add to what Gord posted, Pings are very difficult to fit becuase their shafts are unlike most other manufacturers. They don't have R300, R400, S300, S400, X100 etc. Like Hogan shafts they work differently.

Definately, go back and yourself restested over 3 or 4 fittings.

            Re: Custom Fit Clubs

            Great Advice guys.

When I went for my fitting I was swinging nice and easy though. I hardly ever use my "Gorilla Swing" unless I really want to rip it. I haven't really had a chance yet to use the clubs and I am hoping to put in 36 holes tomorrow.

There I can really test them out. I haven't even brought them to a range yet. So tomorrow I should have a better idea. But thanks a million for the advice. It's all great information that I never really thought about before.

              Re: Custom Fit Clubs

my first clones, were like mallets. the heads were very heavy and it was easy to hit them far with little effort. once i went with the ping +3, i found the heads lighter and more balanced, but i lost distance due to the lack wieght in the heads i was use to. just a thought

Never thought of that paterick... Makes sense to me... these clubs are so light.

I went out today, tried to get 36 holes in only did 18 and I am starting to hit them better. They don't go to the right so much anymore and my driving is coming around. I went from 120 last week to 107 today and I fell that it's going to get better. I was making some good shots with the new clubs and I just need to find my mojo with them.... LOL

                  Re: Custom Fit Clubs

Just another thing to check regarding your iron shots going right and short. You mentioned that the club-fitter said that you were +2 degrees. This is an adjustment to the lie of your clubs. It may also be possible that your lie is a wee bit too upright. Take a look at your divot and where any dirt/mud/turf is at on your club. I say do this because if your lie is too upright, the toe of the club will start your divot. When this happens, the toe of your club will slow down and the heel will continue to accelerate through your swing resulting in your shots being "pushed" to the right and obviously, your distance will be affected.

                  Just my 2 cents worth.

                    Re: Custom Fit Clubs

I have never heard of other ping owners saying they had a hard time to square the club.... Makes sense though. I'm going to try that tape thing and see if it helps...

Lately they have been pretty good. I'm playing more and maybe it's just that I am getting used to them. Still ( and I don't want to beat a dead horse here) I can't hit my 3 or 4 high loft irons. played with stance, swing and alignment nothing worked.... Still only hit it at best 180 yards or so... which is crazy I am back to hitting my Pitching wedge 150 yards+.
As for the grip on my drivers... I replaced the new ones with the style of my old clones... They weren't the biggest size that I had before but it's working... still slicing with the Taylor Made R7 setup for a draw but that will get worked out later... This year is just to get used to clubs and so far I have consistently knocked about 5 strokes off my game from last year

Still having fun... So that's all I am concerned with for this year... or the remainder of this year... CRAZY the leaves are starting to turn colour... NO WAY... golf season seems short this year.

                    Well thanks for the advice
