First, identify what type of student you are. How do you learn best? Technical explanation? Visualization? Imitation? Feel? Once you determine that, ask around to other golfers and staff at surrounding golf courses as to who the best instructor is for your type of learning ability.

i guess more specifically, should it be someone who participated inthe PGA? Also, would anyone recomend a woman instructor for a man? i was thinking that their styles might be a little different than mens, but im not sure.

Having PGA experience doesn't necessarily make someone a good teacher. Having a female teaching a male shouldn't be a problem either. Every golf swing is different - each golfer has their own style. As long as they can teach the swing to you in a manner in which you understand, you buy into what they teach you 100%, you practice the drills they give you and you keepthe same instructor you should be successful. After 1 or 2 lessons you will knwo whether the instructor you have picked is the right teacher for you. If the connection is NOT there, try someone different.
