Am I gripping too hard? Swinging too hard? Or trying to hit down on the ball too much? I know when I hit a good shot as it feels as sweet as it looks!

You could be gripping too tight, while holding you club another person should be able to pull it out of your hands.
Maybe hitting down too much as well.
Hitting down is often a misunderstood term, you do not hit DOWN, you are actually trying to squeeze the ball between your clubface and the ground.On semi soft gound your divot should only be about 1/2 inch (12mm) deep. By using the term HIT DOWN it sounds like we are trying to dig a hole with our club.
Also on hard ground where you cannot take a divot you actually pick the ball up, trying to hit down on hard ground will only lead to wrist injuries that can often take months if not longer to recover.
While I'm at it you do not hit DOWN on soft (wet) ground either. Pick it up sweet and clean.

Are you trying to flip your wrists when hitting down on the ball or are you turning your wrists over?? Trying to flip your wrists when the club is starting to take a divot will cause immense pain.

Thanks for the replies.... I will try to loosen my grip a bit! Plus, I think I need to practice hitting irons of tees. I almost never tee the ball when hitting irons. So, that tells me that I am too focused on thinking I have to hit the ground slightly before I hit the ball. I know the clubs have different lofts for a reason, right? Thanks for the input.

Squeeze the ball between the clubface and the ground the divot starts maybe 1 inch in front (nearer the hole) of the original ball position.
Dont just practice hitting irons off tee's as apart from the 4 par 3's the rest of the round is spent hitting irons off the ground.
