  • The good news and the bad

Forget driving 350-yard holes, your hole-in-ones, albatross, eagles, birdies, swallows etc. I have achieved something far more difficult.
I’ve played golf off and on all my married life, during which time I’ve tried to persuade my wife to play as well (her game is tennis). She has always been adamant that "Golf is a silly game".
Last month she finally joined my golf club – a miracle or what?
The only problem is, she's getting quite keen and hits the ball well, so the edge has been taken off my exhilaration by the thought that one day she might get a lower handicap than mine.
Anyone any suggestions how to prevent this whilst still encouraging her?

The easy solution is to up your game so you will be ahead of her, don't hamper her progress, just increase yours.

My first and best suggestion is to check your ego. If that isn't possible, try only letting her play with range balls, or distance balls. That way, she'll never hold a green.

Easiest solution ... make a $5 wager(or something similar)! I played last summer with a co-worker and he would beat me everytime by 5-8 strokes. So one day I decided to make a suggestion. Lets play 50 cent skins and 50 cent greenies on par 3's. I truly believed it would take him 4 or 5 holes to screw up but, sure enough, he accepted, stepped up to the first tee box and hit one of the worst shots I'd seen him ever hit and it continued through out the rest of the round! I finally beat him!!! I guess this could backfire on you but it is worth a shot!

You should be ashamed of yourself! Hahaha Seriously, it should not be a surprise that she will beat you. Same thing happened to me sorta, kinda as an old co-worker came out to play and had one of the sweetest swings I have ever seen for a person who had only being playing a year. I've been struggling for over 4 now. His so call teacher an ex co-worker also will soon be looking in his rear mirror also. He doesn't agree with me and says he will not teach him everything. How many teaching pros are better than their students? Tiger's? Phil's? Michele Wie? Hope you are getting my drift. Dave Pelz, has he won anything? But, he knows the short game like a Southern Preacher knowing the bible on a Sunday morning! Be proud that you taught her!

Thank for all the advice guys.

I think I might coat her clubs with chocolate and then she'll be too busy licking them to shoot a low score.

You could always go Tonya Harding on her on the 18th tee if she is ever beating you!

Re: The good news and the bad

It sounds like her swing thoughts are all wrong, since she is new she is not worried enough.

The Mantra should be coursing through her head:
Head down...don't hit it thin...hinge the wrists...stay out of the water...don't come over the top...don't hit it fat...keep the head still...stay out of the water...steady backswing...keep on plane...don't bob the head...stay out of the water...don't do whatever it was I did on my last swing...stay out of the water...hope there is no sand up there...stay out of the water...enjoy the game????

There are variants the Mantra but once she has ingrained this into her mind her scores will either ballon or remain nice and high. One of the best ways to reinforce the Mantra is to watch a lot of the Golf Channel and read a lot of golf instructional magazines.

A mate of mine had a similar situation. He told his wife she would have to have sex with him each time she beat him! Never happened.

Make her play from the men's tees when she starts to get close to beating you.
