  • First Chip In Eagle

I was on the Par 5 6th today when my first chip in eagle happened. I drove about 260 on the left side of the fairway then hit my hybrid 3 to about 10 yards left of the green. On the left side of the green there is a ridge, i land my ball on it, and it takes of straight to the pin, hits the stick and drops in. This created my best round ever of +1 36.

Congratulations! Hope one day I will be able to post up such an achievement myself! Curious, so how far did you actually hit with the hybrid 3? My set of clubs (Maruman Proliner G1) comes with an M4, and I do not have any 3 iron nor 4 iron. My Hybrid is still shrink-wrapped as I am not ready to move on to anymore besides my putter, PW, 7-iron and 5-iron :P I'm new to this Hybrid thingy.. What's the common take on such clubs??

AFA I'm concerned, when the Tour pros are putting hybrids in their bags, they can't be all that bad.

I love my hybrids. I have a 4H (22*) and 5H (26*) from Innovex (innovexgolf.com) and they're fantastic from all sorts of lies (haven't tried them in FW bunkers).

I have an SMT Avocet 19* (3H) and love it, too. I use it off the tee as my safety club.

I used to carry a 3i with my hybrids, but found it too unreliable out of rough. The Avocet, however, is just fantastic. I've got no fear out of any lie with that puppy in my hands. Now, Ian might chime in with 'because you've got no fear, you swing better' - and he's probably right. However, most equipment guys will tell you that if you're clubs don't inspire confidence, it's time for new ones!

Mine is called a M4, and I was told it's between a 3-4 iron (because my set doesn't come with those). Does this mean that your 5H is kind of a replacement for your 5-iron and 6-iron? I'm not sure how the degrees work out either?

            Re: First Chip In Eagle

The problem is that there's no consistency in the world of golf gear, just approximates, and each set of clubs is different.

That said, here's the approximate breakdown of lofts. 'Beginner' clubs are usually a degree or two stronger in loft to add distance.

            1W anywhere from 4* to 12*
            3W 15*
            5W 18*
            7W 21*

            1i 15*
            2i 18*
            3i 21*
            4i 24*
            5i 28*
            6i 32*
            7i 36*
            8i 40*
            9i 44*
            PW 48*
            GW 52*
            SW 56*
            LW 60*
            XLW 64*

Now, bear in mind that that's the ideal. Each club would be progressively shorter (wedges same length) and the lie would get progressively flatter.

            So my 4H @ 22* is in between my 3i and 4i, and my 5H @ 26* is somewhere between my 4i and 5i.

However, I've seen clubs +/- 2* in loft (ie 7i's at 34* and 38*) - so go figure.

I can hit the hybrid about 230 pretty consistently. With a 3i, I could get that only if i got great contact, now i dont have to worry about it.

                That's encouraging

I'm currently practising my swing with my 7-iron. Wonder what I should be expecting when I use my hybrid? I am guessing, right foot should be back a few inches, ball closer to target a few inches... Anything else??

                  Re: First Chip In Eagle

You must consider that i hit a wedge about 130, so your distance on your hybrid will be shorter than mine unless you are hitting your wedge that far already.

                    Re: First Chip In Eagle

You can come watch me play rick, i will hit a wedge on the 132 par 3 3rd when there is no wind (the wind is in my face, and with a typical swing, i will get it there, to where i want to. Typically the hole plays more 140-145ish so i hit a 9. I will admit sometimes i will hit a 7 160 or somethin like that, but only when in the rough. Like i said i will have to take a few pictures to show you if you want rick. Or i can show you a 230 tee shot with my hybrid. Just ask me and i will show you. Like i say i hit 270 when warm. I can hit anywhere from 230-300 given the situation. No, 300 isnt exagerrating. Driving the 303 first proves that.
