Sometimes I hold my putter horizontally along the line of putt in front of me pointing to the hole. Then I align one of the marks on the ball to the putter shaft so I can align my putter to the chosen line of putt when I address he ball. I've asked my golf instructor if this is ok and he said "As long as you don't touch the actual line of putt on the green you're ok." I checked the USGA rules and there's nothing specific about this. I never see anyone else do this and wanted some feedback. What do you think about this? It's a bit complicated but I find it helps a lot to line-up my putts.

Other than perhaps being a bit ponderous there is nothing wrong with what you are doing. Certainly it is NOT cheating. The rule your pro was referring to was Rule 16 - 1 a. Touching Line of Putt. It states "The line of putt must not be touched except:" then lists a few exceptions which I won't list here as you obviously have access to a rule book and can look up Rule 16. If what you do helps you putt, go for it. -

Nothing wrong with that. I'll do the same thing on a tee shot - hold my club up so that the shaft is on line with the pin (or other target) and my ball. Then I pick an intermediary target on the shaft line. Square up, setup, and fire away.Comment
