Re: golf team
Try to play with the players that are the best. If you can keep up with them, you have a great shot.

Re: golf team
Unless you have pure natural talent, practicing is what you will need to do, all the time, just like any high school sport. The team practices probably right after school for 2-3 hours either playing 9 holes on practice days and playing matches about 2 times a week. Then the range work, and classroom instruction will be up to the coach. Your weekends are yours to do what you want. I would mix it up. Play matches with friends - real matches - for money or something substantial that keeps your adrenalin interested. Learning to deal with this drug flowing through your veins is essential, and is only gained in true competitions. Then practice on the range, mixing up putting, short, irons, and driver/woods. Do not stick to only your weaker areas, mix it up regardless. If you work harder on one area, the areas where you were good will not be exercised and will slowly become less sharp. You need to have an area in your game that you can say "I am the best....putter, chipper, irons..etc", and have that confidence on the course will make up for a lot of strokes.
If this is your first time trying out (assuming you are a freshmen), that you should expect yourself to be nervous, and intimidated. Don't fight that feeling. Use it to your advantage. The nervous feelings are the adrenalin. If you were not nervous, then there is something wrong with you physically and I recommend you seeing a doctor. Having adrenalin allows your body to do things absolutely, without any doubts, and complete commitment to the action needed. This is great in the full swings. But putting and chipping is where you will need to learn to control it. My tricks are simple. Take deep breaths during the setup, long and controlled. Hear your breath exhale and then when you lungs are empty, swing/putt. Having no air in your lungs allows your full range of motion, and puts your head in the same state every time.
Depending on the type of person you are...type A, B or C, (a's worry about everything, are control freaks but have an exceptional ability to be focused...c's are very easy going, happy to be alive, flit from flower to flower without a care, but have an exceptional ability bounce back from defeat or a bad hole putting the past behind them...b's are a perfect mix. Be a "b". Know what you are, and work on the other. Never give up your natural type, just work on knowing that your type lacks in the ability to be great in the other areas...you have to consciously work on being better at that other type. If you are already a "b", great for you...you’re ahead of the game.
I talk about the mind game a lot to my students fixing what their parents did to them. But it is "you" that has to undo it. Your parents are already set in their ways, and asking them to help you is basically asking a fish to fly (I know there are flying fish, so I leave the possibility that your parents might actually help you there)... I was very lucky. My Dad is an A+++, and my Mom is a C---. How they ever got together is beyond me, but it made for a good mix growing up. I got to see both sides. I am a C+. Not quite a B, but close. I have to work to focus. I get distracted occasionally at the fun of the game during comps. But I know this and tell myself to "focus here". That all there is to it. A "B+" might have to tell themselves that "The last shot was the last one, that's ok. This one is the I will think about now".
Hope this helps you. Keep us updated on your progress. There are great guys on this site with a wealth of knowledge and I know will love to help you out! Good LUCK!
