  • 2 iron

    Just a thought,

I have just added the 2 iron to my set of Taylormade LT 2s, I find this a great club, but don't see many about.

Anyone else still using a 2 iron.

    Re: 2 iron

    Hi, Ian.

I use to play my 2 iron and I love it. There is nothing for me in golf like hitting my 2 in the sweetspot. I like the sensation, I like the ball flight, but the thing I like best is that almost nobody around me can do that. Some kind of pride?

        Hi Ben,

        The loft is 18 Degrees.

Even thinking about hitting a 2i scares me

I thought 18 degrees would be about standard for a 3 iron...or is there a lot of variation in these standards?

            5i - 26*
            4i - 22*
            3i - 18*

            Aren't these what you'd expect?

In that case, I carry a strong 2 iron hybrid (3H at 19ยบ).

The reason I asked for loft is because of loft creep.

COG's have been getting progressively lower, so lofts have been getting progressively weaker to keep ball flights 'normal'.

So, today's 3i or 4i is the same loft as an old school 2i.

This is what's facilitated the need for a gap wedge. You couldn't let the SW creep, otherwise we'd never clear some bunker lips... hence the need for the GW.

Taylormade LT 2s are tour lofted.

Check out the site for all lofts, I only have 2-P I carry my own Callaway wedges.

Back in the 70's, i believe, they delofted all the clubs. I believe it was Ping?? Here are the new lofts (usually):

                  3i 22*
                  4i 25*
                  5i 28*

Ahhhh...and I bet this hasn't been universally adopted. It would explain why, as I was browsing in a golf shop the other day, I saw two hybrids marked '3', one lofted 22* and the other lofted 18*.

It wouldn't suprise me if you saw 15* and 21 or 22* marked at 3, but 18* is strange (15* obviously being a 3 wood.) No, those are pretty common lofts - check the OEM and component sites - all irons have basically the same loft, within a degree or as much as two, but you'd be hard pressed to find a new 18* 3 iron these days.

These days, 18* is standard for 2 iron and 5 wood.

Yep - good ol' Karsten Solheim started it all - innocently enough. He weakened his lofts 1ยบ across the board, so that his clubs would be longer than everybody elses.

After that, COG dropping resulted in the need to further weaken lofts in order to keep the ball flight normal.
