There is a double faced chipper that is illegal. However, there are also a number of other single faced chippers, including some with rounded backs, that are, to the best of my knowledge, quite legal.

I am inclined to agree with Greg that you are better off using a short iron - the number of the club used depending on the carry to roll ratio you want; ie how much apron you have to carry v how much green you have to work with.

That said, I also know a few mid handicap players who use a chipper as the only club around the green and over years of practice have become quite deadly with it.

I guess ya pays ya money and makes ya choice.

Any club with two faces is illegal, excluding putters.

I also agree, use a different club. Why use up one of your 14 clubs with a club that has such a limited roll and there is a club in your bag that will do the same job as the chipper?

The biggest thing people like chippers for is that it forces you to use the same swing you use for putting. Well, why not do that for chipping with the clubs you already have?

I use my Rescue Mid if the lie is right. It's a very versatile club as far as bump-and-runs go.
