Re: new to golf, made a 78

    doogkie,

what is the slope at the course you play? Do you know if it is a difficult course to play?

I play at Jyvas-Golf and I get some extra. Like a hcp 36 playing from yellow tee is 41. ( 72 + 41 to play at his normal 36 hcp).

Re: new to golf, made a 78

doogkie, what is the slope rating for the course where you shot the 78? Also, are you playing the ball where it lies, no moving the ball for a better lie. Are all penalty strokes being counted and penalty relief being executed properly? Are some putts considered as gimmies? If Mulligans are being used then that is not playing according to USGA rules and really does not count. If there are some bending of the rules of golf for stroke play then the 78 is not legitimate. However, if all the rules have been observed then the 78 is a great score for anyone, let alone for someone just starting out.

On a side note, I played 9 holes last night on a short course (3,349 yards and slope of 124) with greens around 10 on a stimpmeter and scored 40. I have been playing for 20 years and was as low as 2.6 handicap in my past. I had probably an all time worst in putting, 22 times. Had I putted respectably I should have been under par or at least par. I had not touched a golf club since April 27th. The point of this sidebar is that I have had many years of golf and several lessons. I played for a Community College in Iowa (#10 on a 10 man team). At my peak, I probably played 100 rounds a year and practiced a lot. The best I could muster was the 2.6 USGA handicap primarily due to being such a huge head case. I am certain I would have been scratch had it not been for the head case issue. However, today, I play a lot less (maybe 10 - 12 rounds a year), am not a head case, know what I can do, practice far too seldom, know my swing rather well, can correct flaws quickly and still hover around the 6 - 8 handicap range. Because I have good fundamentals, I can still score and shoot a few rounds a year at or near even par. Last year I shot 73 from the Championship tees at Riverdale Dunes. Darn putting!

That said, keep playing and improving. Play different courses and with better players. Bet a coke to spice it up.

Play well and hit it straight,

      RD

Why is everybody finding it so hard to believe this young man. instead of trying to deride him we should be congratulating him. maybe he is a prodigy.

        MOZART:wrote first symphony aged 4.
SUFIAH YUSOF:gained maths degree at oxford , aged 13.
BLAKE ROSS: web designer aged 10.
        The list is endless.
Maybe , if the truth be known, there is just hint of jealousy from certain people.

I for one say : WELL DONE YOUNG MAN.

Re: new to golf, made a 78

no no first time on course wasnt 78, yall have been reading this wrong, it was probably around my 4th or 5th time i shot the 78, i meant the first time i used my 5 wood as my driver i shot the 78

its a 71.2/122 course but they have moved all the tees back, white is where blue used to be, i play off of blue now and its pushed the length from 6436 on the card to around 6800 yards

its not a hard course, ive since played a bunch around here including some the pga has played in georgia and have done good

that 78 was a long time ago, i went back up and was in a downfall there for a while but now im back and im shooting low 70s NO MULLIGANS, NO GIMMIES,

if anyone wants to play with me ill prove it, i live in griffin georgia(this sounds cocky but i dont mean it like that i would just like to play some golf ) anyways off to the course, city championships start tomorrow mornin, gotta practice

I am not deriding doogkie. I am asking some general questions I have from people claiming scores. I say great golfing to doogkie and have no reason to doubt his 78. That is great golf for most players and something to be proud of. I thought I stated that in the last sentence of the first paragraph. I have played with too many players to count that claim to shoot scores not counting the mulligans per side, dropping OB balls at the point of OB instead of rehitting the shot from the original spot, gimmies from 6 feet on greens, etc etc etc. doogkie said no gimmies or mulligans or the sort so I believe him. Again, I say great golfing!!!

I suppose each one of us has to evaluate our own games and see if we have a tendency to improve our lie or add a mulligan here and there. If a golfer does then the score is tainted. For example, I was in the middle of the fairway of my final hole (80 yards from the pin) in a patch of fairway that the mower was too low and stripped most of the grass. Instead of taking the time to call the playing partners over and get a free drop, I played the shot (3/4 punch bump and run) and the ball sailed over the green. This was in a golf league and we were a little behind the clock so I played it. I have no doubt that had I dropped, as I was entitled, I would have had a chance putting for birdie instead of ending up with a bogey. With me already winning my match and the hole, I felt that calling for relief and taking time to do so would not add to the match. Yes, I counted all the strokes (5) which will do little, if anything, in adding to my handicap.

I did not really take your post as directed to me. However, I just wanted to be on the record in that I believe there are those in the world born to golf. doogkie just could be one of those blasted people. If that is the case, YES, I AM JEALOUS!!!. It has taken me 20 years to be able to play respectfully (almost auto pilot).

I've got a question: are you playing it down? As it lies, or are you improving the lie?

If you are playing it down, you are one in a million. My hat is off to you!!

playing it down, and this course is not the best manicured, most of the time im hitting off of bare lies or something of the sort but thats golf, all these sissies today(In my opinion) grumble about the fairways not being plush and whatever, golf isnt like that, you play the ball where it lies, because thats where your shot put it, if you dont want it there dont hit the ball there anymore

i like not knowing how my lie is going to be, i have to create shots in my head and execute, anyway else would just be boring

well i gotta get some sleep, city championships is tomorrow morning

i appreciate all the comments and i can see where some people would be skeptics

                              Hi doogkie,

I asked about your course. Mine is 72.0/144 and 5468 meters long. (Played from yellow tee.) I have been playing it for tree weeks and cannot make 78. Closes I've got is 90. And often I go over 100.

(I have practiced in the winter. Because of our climate in Finland our season started in June with actual greens.)

78 is good! It does not matter if your course is just a little easier. You are a natural golfer. Let us know how you did in the competition.

...but breaking 80 is just waiting to happen :-)
