  • You don't have to see the ball to play well

When struggling to hit well I commonly find that swinging with my eyes shut (for real) allows me to sense the club's head much better and produce better shots.

See the link - I have heard of this guy before (proud to be his fellow country man). See how much he has achieved

I can well believe that. Where students totally lose the plot, we quite often get them to hit tee'd up 8-irons with their eyes closed.

But here's a fact that very few people know: Nobody can see impact, not even Tiger!
The club approaches the ball at 60mph even at a slow swing, if you're a stonger swinger it could be 100mph. The downswing takes roughly 1/3rd of a second, hip to hip takes about 1/15th of a second and impact itself is no more than 1/50th of a second.

Nobody can see an object travelling at that speed for that short space of time.

That's what makes golf difficult because the player has to anticipate impact.

Pelz also talks about this in his book "Short Game Bible", in relationship to ball position. Pelz says pros he work with hit the ball just as well with eyes closed as open as long as the ball is in the correct position - i.e. middle of stance for short irons. Also give you a good feel for the swing and a feel for where the ball is going without looking at it.

I've always wanted to try that but never had the guts haha. The next time I go to the range, I'll tee the ball up and give it a go! But hey, at what point do you actually close your eyes?? :P

No problems at all. Set up as you always do, make sure you are on the correct plane in whatever way you want (i take the club back half way to horizontal), place the club back behind the ball close your eyes and fire - keep your eyes shut to full finish
