  • Should I buy a new Driver ?

I've been using a Taylor Made Bubble Burner 11.5 loft for the last 6 or 7 years. I hit around 80% of fairways.

The question is : Should I bother buying a new Driver, a more modern one. I'm willing to spend around £250. Would it be worth it ?
Will it give more yards off the tee ?

At a indoor golf centre simulation I could manage 235 yards with my current driver. I play off 5 as well.

    Anybody ??

    Thanks !

There is so much out there, it is probably worth getting fitted to narrow down your choices. You may also find you do as well with your old driver as the rec: ones. I would only get fitted in mid season though when the weather is warm and you are swinging well. Fittings out of season are tough.

I'm wondering if it's worth buying a new driver. Like I said , I hit 80% fairways, I'm used to it. I hit the ball really well. I'm not super long but not that short either. What would be worse than spending alot of money on a new club and finding out it's no better than the old one ?

Only if you can try the many that are out there and get fitted- especially shaft.

It's about $75-100 per fitting and you can usually put that money towards the purchase of a new club. IF YOU FIND YOU ARE HITTING YOUR CLUB AS WELL AS THE RECOMMENDED ONES, THEN YOU HAVE SPENT THAT MUCH MONEY TO KEEP YOURS WITHOUT SECOND GUESSING YOURSELF.

            I'm a club ho.

I would buy two clubs, and try them both out, and sell my original club in the meantime.

Then, if it didn't work out with the other two clubs, I would try to buy another club like my original.

Now, from a logical standpoint, if you're hitting 80% of fairways, what are you expecting to get out of a new driver? More length, at the possible expense of accuracy?

No I want to keep the accuracy.

I have a bit of spare cash available which made me think of buying a new driver. I bought a set of new irons last year so I don't need to replace those.

I know it's winter at the moment but there are three par 4's I can't reach at the moment.

Assuming that the Burner is a steel driver, you could still get some extra yardage with a titanium driver. Keep the same loft.

You could even try to take your driver to a clubfitter, and try and keep the magic alive (same weight head, CC's, etc).

The other important thing is to try and match your shaft. By that, I don't mean buy another shaft like you've got and tip it and trim it like your current one. But your clubmaker needs to know how it bends, and find you a much similar shaft.

Theputtking - this is a no brainer!! The fact that every pro has gone to newer technology and you (at an impressive 5 handciap) cannot reach some par 4s should be enough. You will definitely gain distance, 30 odd yards from that model you are using and your mishits will go straighter. Its possible that you may lose a touch of accuracy due to greater clubhead speed but not much judging by how accurate you already are.

The newer drivers are so much easier to hit that it wont take much adjustment for you. Go treat yourself and be amazed how much driver technolgy has moved on. First shot i ever hit with a "modern" driver - i hit it a bit thin, certainly not a centre strike - and i almost drove a 310 yard hole - the smile on my face as i walked down that fairway made the £200 odd i spent worth every penny!

                  enjoy

                    Thanks Nick for your advice.

I think I will treat myself to a new driver.

great clubs the taylor mades - will be very interested how you do. I bet money you are better with it than your current one. Remember to tee that ball a bit higher with the deeper face and let it fly!

                          good luck

                            I just saw the pictures...

Yes, you should buy a new driver.

                            An SMT Encore. Pictures here.

I'd mate it with an Aggressive nRAGE. Info here

Then you just laugh as you rain bombs on short par 4s.

                              Hi Puttking,

Just had a quick read of this thread, firstly, it's not the club that hits 80% of fairways, it your ability to do it, even with a 'now' shallow faced driver.

You have made a good choice of club and may find an increase in fairways hit due to the larger face and a larger sweet spot.

However don't get caught in the trap of more distance, you may find a little more due to the larger sweet spot, but it how hard you hit it as you probably know.

With all the drivers coming out year on year every year promising "another" 10yds.......I should be hitting about 500yds by now.!!!!
