• White to Blue and back again

I've only been playing for a couple of years and have yet to master my long irons. On a particular long par 3 the distance from the white tee requires a long iron , what I do is move back to the Blue tee and hit my 5W. Moving closer to the flag ie. the Red tee would seem illegal, but is moving farther away from the flag OK? I only do this on this one hole.

The closest I can find is something akin to 11-5, playing from outside the proper tee box.

It can be done, but if you do it, the others in your group can request that you re-tee properly.

I'd just play from the same sets of tees - learn to hit a chokedown 5W.

The teeing ground is only two club lengths in depth. See definition of 'teeing ground'.

In Strokeplay, if you tee outside the teeing ground it is a two stroke penalty. And then you must play the ball from the correct place. Rule 11-4b
In Matchplay, there is no penalty but your opponent may ask you to tee again. And almost certainly will do if you hit a good one. Rule 11-4a

OK,OK, but.... I'm still in a teeing ground? Blue teeing ground! Is there a rule that says you must start all holes on the same teeing ground you started on? My pride would prevent me from moving up to the womans tee but moving back to the pro tee would seem OK.

I know I've got to start learning my long irons.

I think for handicap purposes, playing from a different set of tee boxes screws up the slope and rating.

I couldn't find anything at the USGA website regarding it - maybe contact them directly.

There is only one teeing ground for a particular hole in a stipulated round. In the same way as there is only on green. Anything else is a wrong teeing ground and you are subject to a two stroke penalty for playing from a wrong teeing ground. If it is not corrected you could be in Serious Breach and subject to DQ.
I assumed you were asking for the rule on going back from the correct tee.
If you want to break the rule, ok by me. But why not break them all?

Yep, thats the rule allright.
So if you do this in non-matchplay comp you will be playing your 3rd from the correct tee.

Thanks Guys,

I've always wanted a 7W, I guess it's time to by one!

Maybe with all the good swing advice in this site I can start hitting from the Blue's regularly!

On the other hand if this is a friendly game then there's nothing really - except macho pride - to stop you playing from the ladies if you want to, nor do all of the group have to play from the same tee.

Sometimes I think that as well as categorising tees by sex and competition there should be an ability level category - in fact there's one guy I play with who uses the championship tees whilst i use the standard mens tees.

It doesn't spoil our game because in many ways we are both playing against ourselves.

bdbl, I largely agree that the tees need to be skill coded, not gender or playing style coded.

In fact, there is a game played during a casual round where you start at the middle tees. Bogey or worse, and you move up a tee box. Par you stay put, Birdie or better and you move back a tee box. This is a blast to play on a tournament course with 5 tee boxes per hole. We usually declare the guy with the most time spent playing long the winner.

LP - Sounds as if that could be an enjoyable variation, which I think is the point. Its meant to be fun!

Sure take the weekly medal seriously (well a little seriously).

Certainly practice with a purpose because, whether like me you are a high handicapper or like young Ricky you are a budding superstar , we all want to improve.

Above all remember that most weekends you're spending 4 - 5 hours in the open air with some friends - you might as well enjoy it.

I'll put my soapbox away now , but seriously I see so many people out on the course not having fun that i wonder why they bother.

You have to play your shot from no further back than 10 yards behind your tee markers.

See here:

It is not 10y, it is two club lengths. You choose the club.

I think you are confusing it with how far in front of the Official Measured mark the tees may be placed for it still to count as a 'measured hole'
