  • Stapleford for Dummies

Basically I have to preface this post by saying I am an idiot apparently. My golfing buddies have given up on me understanding Stapleford scoring and have now told me to figure it out on my own before our next major. The threat is real this time. It's a tough love measure intended to get me self-sufficient. There will be no pitty scoring for me, or if there is, I may lose a few in translation.

I am here to ask anyone who can spell it out in clear terms, how the heck does this Stapleford system work?

    Cheers!

I believe the correct term is Stableford. Google for "stableford rules" and you'll definitely come up with several links that explains it in detail.

    Good luck!

      Dadvocate,

I will try to keep this easy.

OK first things first the scoring.

If you get a bogie = 1 point
If you get a par = 2 points
If you get a birdie = 3 points
If you get an eagle = 4 points

If you play off scratch the scoring is that simple.

      Thats simple ok........................??

Now when you have a H/Capp thing become easier for you, do you understand every hole has an index for example index 1 is the hardest hole and 18 is the easiest hole. Ok so far........??

If your H/Capp is say 18 then you have one extra shot on every hole.
If you H/Capp is say 5 then you only have an extra shot on index 1-5.
If you H/Capp is say 24 then you have one shot on every hole, but on holes 1-6 stroke index you now have two shots.

So lets play a game with an 17 h/capp, hole one par 4, index 12, remember you have an extra shot because of you h/capp...........................you scored a 5, with your extra shot you actually got a par....5 shots less your h/capp allowance. = 2 points for a 5.

Hole two par 5, index 3, you have an extra shot here too.............you score a 5 great par, less you extra shot........ its a birdie.=3 points.

Hole 3, par 3, index 18 now you don't get a shot here because you have an 17 h/capp and this is index 18 the easiest on the course..............you score a 3, great par with you h/capp no extra shots so par means par = 2 points.

      Hope this helps.

So if you're a 26 handicap, you get 2 shots on index 1-8, and 1 shot on 9 through 18.

I'd print Ian's list, and keep it in your pocket on gameday.

          Hi,

Just came across this today - Really simple explanation, thanks!

          One quick question though:

          Say I play off 12, and shoot 3 on a Par 3 (Index 4) - I have 2 extra shots so I have a net score of 1 - Do I get 4 points as I am 2 under par?

What if I score a 2 or even a hole-in-one - Sorry, just a bit confused on this one.

In stableford, all points are in relation to par.

So if you get 2 strokes, and make a 1, you're effectively 4 under par.

                Re: Stapleford for Dummies

As I understand it, on any individual Competition day (Stroke, Par or S/Ford), where the Comp of the day is not a team one (or Match Play), the players only scoring obligation is to put the number of actual strokes taken on the score card.

I don't believe a player can be DQ'd in a comp round if he puts an incorrect Stableford score for a hole provided the strokes taken are correct...

So, all dadvocate need do is ensure his correct strokes taken are recorded on his card, the match committee then have to work out his final stableford score for him...

                Too Easy...

Of course, if (as I think this situation is) its just a social group of buddies, then I'm sorry to say, it appears that dadvocate will be on his own...

                Cheers

If you are off 12 then you dont have 2 shots on any hole.
You have 1 shot on index 1 -12.

                        Re: Stapleford for Dummies

What we do is this... The game is based on 39 points. We then add or subtract from that handicaps. I am a +3 handicap, so I start with 42 points. We then subtract points as we play each hole.

                        0 - double bogie
                        1 - bogie
                        2 - par
                        3 - birdie
                        4 - eagle

If you have a 9 handicap, then you start with 30 points. If you make par on the first hole, you now have 28 points, and so forth. We play for $1 per point difference at the end. If everyone plays to their handicap, the final score should be three points. We also play that if you get to negative points, the bet doubles. And everybody is playing everybody else.

It makes it easy for different handicaps to play together.
