  • Not wearing a glove

Over the last year I have taken to playing without a glove - I went to the range once without one by mistake and found I preferred it.

The thing is I now get funny looks and comments from golfing partners (to be honest I'd have thought they had enough to worry about ) who insist I MUST wear a glove.

Anyone know of any pros who play (or played) without gloves so that I can shut them up? Anyone here have the same preference?

You don't have to motivate your choice, just look at them with pity in your eyes, shake your head a little and say quietly "poor guy, what an ignoramus".

    That'll shut them up.

      Re: Not wearing a glove

I played for a while without it, but found that a new golve helped add grip without the need to increase grip pressure.

That said, I'm sure that if I started washing my grips every couple of rounds, I wouldn't need a glove nearly as much.

That said, I just bought a pair of SMT gloves with a lifetime warranty - so I'll probably use a glove for the rest of my life. Any time the glove gets wet, dirty, whatever, for only the cost of shipping (both ways) I get a brand new premium glove.

        Re: Not wearing a glove

When I first started playing I too wore a glove simply because everyone else was doing it and others don't consider you a real golfer if you don't look, speak, and do what other golfers do (huh). Then I realized peer pressure doesn't control me in any other area of my life so why should golf be different. Now I go gloveless whether its dry or wet out and this is my preference.

Sam Snead would say that if you needed a glove to hold the club through your golf swing that you were swinging too hard.

Ben Hogan never wore a glove - and he's the greatest striker of the ball who ever lived, so tell your buddies to stick that in their pipe and smoke it

On the other hand (no pun intended) I read that Tiger Woods goes through 10 to 15 gloves per round (damn those cheap Nike gloves.... if only he'd signed with Footjoy....)

If wearing a glove a hole made me play like Tiger I think I might change my mind on gloves!

Hogan and Snead - works for me

I have not worn a glove for two years now. I think it gives you much better feel and it's easier to maintain a light grip on the club. This is essential for a good golf shot.

Freddie Couples is known for never wearing a glove....

                  Re: Not wearing a glove

I have tried playing with and without.

I now wear a glove for every shot except my putts.

The puting on of my glove is a very important part of my pre shot routine (i.e. it starts it).

I won't play without one any more.

Do what you feel comfortable with and you won't go wrong.
