  • To buy or not to buy

    Hi everyone!

I probably should have this in the equipment forum, but at the same time I have a general question as well about buying used clubs.

As a lefty living in the Philippines I struggle to find products that suit me. If I see a glove that works for lefties, I buy it. If I were to see a hybrid 5 or 6 iron of unknown quality, I’d seriously consider buying just to have one. When I was in Australia over Christmas I bought three clubs to add to my bag simply because I could. So strong is the drive to be opportunist in this neck of the woods.

It has already backfired with my 3 Wood. I ended up getting an offset 3 Wood, which just isn’t working for me. I thought it was at first, but I’ve come to see that I don’t like offset with woods am hitting mine to an alamring degree of inaccuracy.

I have now made a bigger purchase in getting a Taylor Made R5 N driver from the States because my sister is coming out and was willing to do the leg work for me. I did this solely on the reviews I read from many sites as well as getting feedback from some of my friends who know more than I do. I was able to hit a TM 580 Driver at the range for a lefty to get some idea, but even that had a shaft length set for an Asian player. Nonetheless, I hit it pretty well, well enough to consider the R5 N driver a good option since it is meant to be a better, more forgiving club. I need a good driver also, which prompted this somewhat risky purchase.

Happy as I am with this purchase (or hope to be after the cost trial in a week), an old contact here in Manila texted me on Sunday saying he had two lefty Taylor Made fairway wood heads (3 & 5) that another customer had put on consignment with him. My lefty urge compelled me to check them out at his shop. They look okay. The problem I have is that I can’t be sure in the world of fakes today if these are legit.

So, my first question is how the hell do you tell without cutting the bloody things open if they are Tayor Made "legit" or not? The guy runs a pro shop and he swears by them (something to do with the screw fittings inside the housel (sp?).

Secondly, am I being totally stupid in even considering this as an option? Mind you, I would love to round out my fairway woods with Taylor Made clubs, especially lefty clubs already in Manila considering that I am now again on the market for a 3 wood. I also have some degree of bargaining power here.

I am thinking off asking the guy to put the shafts from my old 3 and 5 woods on these and hit them. I figure that is probably the best test for the difference, right?

Any feedback from people before I run headlong into a stupid purchase or a lost opportunity would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

Re: To buy or not to buy

    AVOID ILLEGITIMATE CLUBS! BUY COMPONENT!

Now, that said , you may be struggling with your offset wood not because of offset, but because of the shaft.

Offset serves two purposes: It gives the golfer another split second to close the clubface (anti-slice property, but a tiny one), and it also allows the mass to get further behind the leading edge of the club, helping to get ball flight up (more than shaft kick point will).

As for lefty clubs - your buddy who sent you the text message, can't s/he get you clubs, especially to demo?

As for the screw fitting in the hosel, it's something more and more head makers are doing, as it leaves a place for the epoxy to go, rather than back up the shaft.

To speak to how to determine if the club is fake or not, there are a couple ways to check. The first is to compare it to the conforming/non-conforming list of clubs at the R&A or USGA website (photo comparison), or call the company - they may know what the clones have put on their clubs that aren't on the original. The third way is to go to a rock-solid distributor, and look at the heads side-by-side.

Thanks again, Low Post! As usual, you are right on with what I should do. As luck would have it, there is a TM shop very near to the place that is selling these two fairway woods I’m considering. If they are legit, I stand to get these two lefty clubs in Manila for about $100 US each after I get shafts put on. That is a good deal given my geographical limitations.

Speaking of which, I have a follow up question.

Since you say the offset reduces the slice (a problem I have had in the past), is it possible that it is highlighting another problem that I have picked up in recent weeks—namely my nagging desire to pull shots right?

I have worked hard to get rid of my slice, which has happened (in large part based on commentary I have gotten here). Now it seems that I am getting the desired loft (offset or otherwise) but much more often than I would like I pull these high fliers very right of the target line. I feel it has to be my hip rotation somehow, as I have this tendency to start my hands first (just barely) on the downswing. Could the offset club be part of the issue in making this worse?

I really need to get my camera fixed. I’d love to get some feedback on my swing.

Thanks again! I’m hovering at 98-102 because of this great website. May not seem like much, but I was 115-120 6 months ago. May you bring me into the low 90’s at year’s end!

      Cheers!

Re: To buy or not to buy

The offset may actually be helping your pull. Your pull is a result of an out-to-in swing path and a clubface that is closed in relation to target. This out-to-in could very well be a product of hitting with your hands - if you want to start that way, try feeling like you're pulling the butt of the club towards the ground to start.

But since there's no bending to your shot, the face is closed. In other words, straightening out your swingpath may very well make for straight shots with some hard draw.

That is good. I'll really try to get my swing up on the server before I head out for our CAS week with the kids (5 days no golf at all!).

Until then, I'll give what you say above a try. I must already be doing this some of the time becuase I have 50 to 60% of my shots go straight as it is. I must be changing something unwittingly because the swing really feels the same to me.

          I'll work on it.

          Cheers!

Sorry, the grass is indeed greener in this case, pretty much all year round
