  • TaylorMade R7 & R7 425

    I currently have a TM 540xd; however, I tried a friend's R7, I thought it was a mistake to try it at the time, but it looks like I am in the market for an R7 - I am wondering if there is THAT much of a different between the R7 and the R7 425.... the price difference is about $150.00. Thye R&7 is heavier than my R5, and the extra weightworks or me - I think it helps with tempo. I wonder if there is a way to add weight to my R540xd.... I called my local golf place and for an extra $50.00 I could be fit, using a Vector Golf Monitor - I have heard such fittings can advise you to the kind of golf balls to use, i.e., which spin rate best suites you, shaft flex, et cetera.

    I'm pretty sure the difference between the R7 and the 425 is 25 cubic centimeters. This should translate into the 425 being slightly more forgiving.

    If you want to add weight to your current driver, there are two methods.

    Method one is to take the club to a clubmaker. They'll add some weight down the shaft (or possibly pull the shaft and add a tip pin).

    Method two is available to both clubmakers and yourself. Buy some lead tape (I've heard that the shiny metallic duct tape works just as well) and start plastering it on the bottom and skirt of your 540. I mean, you could start to plaster it on the top, too, but come on, that'd look UGLY.

    IMO (and I'm sure you know this) if you haven't been on the launch monitor, GO. (Then, to really mess with them, ask them for a 44" driver with a 205g head - a custom shop may have one, GolfTown certainly will not).

      Thanks LowPost42;

      I had left a message with Golf Town about their VLM and adding weigh to my club, but they didin't get around to the second question, so I am glad you did. Mind you, I have never had a problem with golf town - it sounds like you may have been on a launch monitor - did it help you....

      I am hoping they will allow me to test the R7 and R7 425, on the launch monitor so I can see which one to buy. I found that the R7 goes further than my 540 - a very sweet club!

        I haven't been, but my brother in law has been to T.O. a number of times to jump on the monitor. I believe he goes to Morgan at the Custom Club Shop in Mississauga.

        I'm poor - so I use a swing speed radar and a trajectory mat. Mr. Tom Wishon figures it does a good enough job for driver fitting. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.
