  • Swing speed is 89-95 stiff or regular shaft

    insight:
I went in today to have my swing speed tested. My swing speed was
    89 93 95 89 93 95

six swings and i havent played golf in three months. i was also in trousers, a tight dress shirt and a tie. I want to say that last summer my swing speed was 105-107.

Is this because i havent swung a club in 3 months? The guy told me that with a stock taylormade shaft I should go stiff. If i add an aftermarket shaft I should go regular. I am probably going to buy a used r7 10.5 degree and reshaft it. With a 8.5 titleist 983k my launch angles have been 11 to 12 degrees. I thought by going with a 10.5 and putting a stiffer aftermarket shaft in it I could get the best of both worlds.....

    any suggestions?

I'll suggest that you've got part of the puzzle.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, you'll find yourself in an R flex. That said, the salesman was onto something. Most shafts made 'for TaylorMade' or 'for Titleist' actually play weaker than their designation. This has to do with the male ego. So an OEM 'S' or an aftermarket 'R' should do ya. Even then, it's dangerous sailing, so to speak. An Aggressive nRAGE R plays almost a full flex stronger than a Graphite Design YS 6 in R. Both are good aftermarket shafts.

I bet I could make a ton of cash marketing a true 'R' flex shaft as an OEM 'X' flex, and stamping a true 14° head 10°. Joe Hacker would be hitting them long and straight, and still feel like a mans' man (no Brokeback jokes, please).

Back to the question at hand.

You're on the right path noting that you're launch angle is about 4° higher than your stated loft (assuming your 8.5 was truly spec-ing out at 8.5). The driver mantra is 'more loft, less spin' and optimal launch angle is about 14°. So that's the second part of the puzzle, is to actually hit the head you want to buy, to see how it launches. Guys like Wishon are coming out with heads like the 949MC, which launch up to 3 and 4 degrees higher than their stated loft.

I think that your proposed combo (10.5 w/aftermarket shaft) should work out surprisingly well.

I dont believe in meathead golf. I'd rather brag by actions then what is stamped on my shaft.
