  • Fading Slice?

I recently bought a set of woods with the Taylor Made R7 series, driver, 3 and 5. I got the staff in graphite with a regular flex. My irons are Calloways with stiff fles steel shafts. The driver I had before was some cheap kock-off with a flemsy shaft so I never hit it. I now have a big fading/slice. It's not really a sharp slice. The ball will travel straight for a while then slowly fade to the right. I treid messing with the weights in the back of the club head but the didn't really help. If I slow my swing down, I can hit it pretty straight, but of course not as far. Could this be due to shaft flex. I believe my swing speed is about 88-90 mph. I have been looking at a "mid-stiff" shaft, does anyone think this can help? I can hit the 3- and 5-wood pretty straight, but of course I don't swing those as hard. anyone have any idea on what can cause this fading-slice thing I am having problems with?

Someone had said it's my swing coming from outside to in during the arc and hitting the ball incorrectly. I have tried to correct this, but it only happens when I really try to hit the ball hard. Any thoughts will help.

    Re: Fading Slice?

    Eric,

It could very well be that you're overpowering the shaft.

    1) A true out to in swingpath that ends up moving left to right has to start out left of the target, then bend back across the target line, ultimately finishing right.

    2) If your shot starts out straight, then bends right, your swingpath is fine, but you've got the club open at impact.

    3) If your shot starts out going right, then bends right, your swingpath is in to out.

In scenario 2, there are a few reason why the ball fades/slices. You could not be releasing the club (holding it open). You grip could be too tight (choking it open). You could be overpowering the shaft (lagging the clubface open). This last option has happened to me on a number of occasions with my old driver. Swung inefficiently (and thus slowly) I'd be fine. The minute I'd rip it, or use a better technique, I'd slice it. First, the ball would rocket off for about 50 or 70 yards dead straight, then make a sharp right turn, depending on how hard I goosed it. I moved to a stiffer shaft, and it didn't seem to matter how I swung, it was fine.

    Just a thought.
