  • Do I need to change shafts in my irons?

I have a set of Ping I3 Blades (Maroon Dot/5dg upright) 1 inch longer with X-stiff shafts. I am 46 years old and I hit my PW 125 and my 8 iron 150yds. With these clubs when I miss I usally miss left of the target (pull). I hit the ball fairly high with all my clubs except my long irons. I am a 14 handicap. Should I change my shafts from X-stiff to Stiff or regular?
Thanks in advance for your help.

these are pretty good distances, especially if all carry, are you swinging out of your shoes or is your swing relaxed and balanced??
Also do you have a very stong hand grip?? - not on the club but in general.

You must be very tall at address, and have a very upright swing.

I'm learning that to a point, shaft flex is more about feel than anything else (education via Tom Wishon's Practical Clubfitting). The accuracy gained by going super stiff is often not appreciable enough to offset the distance lost.

I would think your pull probably appears with the shorter irons (8,9,PW), and I'd think it has more to do with being 5° up than a swing flaw. Of course, this is said all without seeing your swing.

You might want to try changing one club, just to see how it feels. If you like it, get them all changed. If not, put the old shaft back in. Just make sure to tell your clubmaker that that's your plan, otherwise he may s-c-r-ap your old shaft. (hyphenated for the filter)

The distances are all carry. With my high ball flight I do not get much roll. I play a draw and have trouble fading the ball. I am 6'3'' and I do not swing very hard and I try to maintain a good tempo. I have a fairly upright golf swing also and only take the club back 3/4 of the way.

I'm not sure I would tinker too much.

I mentioned your lie angle earlier.

An angle that is too upright will cause you to miss the target left, too flat will cause misses right. This is much more prominent in the short irons than the long ones.

May I suggest that you see a clubfitter, and have them have you hit off a lie board? Or, the economical way is to put some masking tape on the soles of your clubs, and hit them off the ground. The ground will scuff the tape, showing you where you made contact. (Hit practice balls with a specific target. We all swing differently when we're trying to accomplish something).

The scuff mark should be in the middle of the sole. Closer to the heel, and you're upright. Closer to the toe, and you're too flat. I'll hazard that you'll get center-to-heel strikes.

Have done the tape with these clubs and the mark is middle to toe. I used to have a real strong toe divot until I went to these 5dg upright clubs. I now just have a slight toe strong divot. After your inputs I am going to try and have a weaker right hand grip. I think I might be closing the club face slightly before impact. Will work on that and get back to you. Thanks for the help and input guys!

Boy, that's something else. I don't think your shaft flex is causing your pull problem. If it's bending left, then yes, weaken your grip a touch.
