Should an extra club be used when hitting a soft ball as opposed to a hard ball? Do both balls travel the same distance, or is there any general concencus?

1. Off hits by as littel as 1/2 inch can rob 5 to 7% of your distance. This is the most significant factor.
2. Clearly fades or hooks impact distance, but let's assume you always hit the same.
3. Rotation off of the club creates a boundry layer that causes the ball to have lift through spin. This gives both lift and stability. Therefore, in many cases, the dimple pattern combined with your hitting pattern (different golfers impart different spins) will impact it.
4. Finally, softness will have a minor impact on distance, so far less than the others, that it should not be a consideration. I can't remember exactly where I read it (I hope I'm not just making it up) but I believe the difference between a hard and soft golf ball may be a yard to two. Three piece balls can be given a layer that damps the initial impulse from F=MA, but this is much more of a feel issue than any type of a distance issue.
