  • driver v 3 wood. the penny finally drops!

    hi all,
    the penny has finally dropped!
ever since starting to play i have had the notion that you must have a driver in your bag and use it as often as possible i now know that nothing could be further from the truth.
i have taken advice from this site on grip, stance, posture trying to cure the slice then as im getting some consistency with my tm e200 i had an accident with it i then bought a mactec nvg and after initial success lost my way with it.
to cut a long story short i went to agd range and cobra were having a demo session i was persuaded to try some clubs so i hit 10 shots with my mactec not one straight all slices and fades i hit 10 with cobra mspeed 3 wood no contest 10 straight shots all over 200 yds ! so i bought one! that going to give me a lot of confidence next time i play.
agd gave me such a good trade in for the mactec so it really is a sound investment.
drivers are a thing of the past for me!

Now I'll tell you to buy a driver sized head with a 3 wood sized loft and length. As I say this, I'll add that if you're not hitting 3 wood off the deck, you might as well take the extra forgiveness from a 400+ cc head.

That's what I would do, if I were me. And I am. Me, that is.

I have the same post today on another thread...

I was blasting my 3 wood between 270 and 300 yards on the weekend off the tee, perfectly straight down the middle. I hit two greens from the fairway 260 and 270 yards out with my 3 wood and hit 2 more greens from the fairway 220 and 230 out with my 5 wood. That is why I would put a fairway wood in my bag over an extra wedge. I can always choke down on my PW to get GW distance, I can't hit anything from the fairway more than 210.

I guess if you can reach say 240yds without a driver, then you can say you don't need a driver because you can still get GIR on the par 4s and 5s? Does that make sense?

              Hi simon,
i think 240yds is possible i hit a previous 3 wood last year somewhere near the 260yd mark. the ground is firming up now and the temperatures are rising.
at this stage of my game im more interested on accuracy than distance.
when and if i get a good reliable swing i may have another go with driver

That's great slater! If I could even get 220 with the 3 wood then I'm definitely going to rely on it. There's plenty of time to work on the driver, maybe only save it for holes with wide fairways

Thats a good way of looking at it simon,
like i said ive now got a 3wood that is perfectly matched to my swing speed im confident that 220/240 yds is achievable on a consistent basis but the big plus is that its arrow straight!
you get to the point that if the driver is the only club you cant hit correctly then get rid of it cos its sure a lot more fun playing off the fairway than the rough!
