Pacing chips

Can someone please clarify for me whether it is legal or not to pace onto the green for where i would like to pitch a chip... some people told me not to then others said it was ok

Also, i never pace on someone's intended line, so that's not an issue

Absolutely legal, and should do this to get an idea of the break and distance. No different than pacing out a putt. However, if someone has an established ball on the green, would avoid walking in that line.
