  • Effect of stiff graphites for slower swing

I just received an eBay purchase of a 5-lw set of used Adams Idea irons. I already had the Idea 4 and 5 i-Woods in senior flex graphites. The Idea irons came with stiff graphite shafts that are original to the irons (Adila). I was planning to replace them with regular, if not senior, shafts.

Here's my perplexion. I hit about 75 balls with the irons this afternoon. I got more distance than with my older Striker Golf irons with regular flex steel shafts. The shots were straight, though I could tell the extra stiffness in the shafts. I thought that a stiffer shaft would cause shots sliced or pushed, but I must be wrong, at least on middle to higher loft irons. As long as I'm hitting straight, should I worry about re-shafting? Or will a shaft with more flex for my slow swing increase my distance or perhaps the height of the shots?

    Thanks,
    Bill

you may not notice it through a few balls, but by the end of the round it may make a big difference as you get a bit tired and can not swing at the required speed.

The stiffer shafts should play a lot more consistant, but will reduce distance.

That being said, with how inconsistant shaft manufacturers are, the stiff shaft could very well play the same as your senior flex. Unfortunate, but very true.

If you want to be sure, take them into a club maker and get them to test the flex on a flex board or frequency machine.

Thanks, Gord. I had not considered either point. A hot, July, South Carolina day may make a difference for sure. I will have the flex checked.
