    That's how I would handle it, if your not playing for anything "no big deal", my guess is that everyone who has golfed with him is just laughing at him and those who haven't have heard about him. If your playing for something then I would make sure (since he always won in the past) to get strokes and then keep score, after each hole to ask him what he got or just keep track and write down the right score. Then if he gives the wrong answer, act suprised then go back and re add them ("well weren't you hitting 4 there and 2 putt?").

    That or find another 4th, which is what I would do but work does complicate the matter.

      I Folks.

      Just to keep you updated. I have since moved shifts so it solved the problem for me . Since we are on opposite night shifts there is no way we can continue playing as a fourball.

        I've a handy little way around this if someone has the same problem in the future...

        If it's a friendly 4 ball, non-comp round, you and the 2 other guys suggest a match 2v2 fourball or something like that.... If the three of ye go for it, he'll have to agree (he probably will anyway)...

        If he tries to shave a stroke or two on a hole his team mate can say - hold on, don't think thats right - don't want to get done for cheating now. Lucky i copped that for "us", could have been an embarrasing way to win a hole/round etc....

        The fact a team mate in a golf situation states the error/cheating takes the potential tension out of it the confrontation.

        I did it before on a friend and ever since when I play a round with him and he tries cheating I just say - "no need to make that 7 into a 5, we're not on the same team today, you don't need to fudge any figures because your stuck on the same team as me...."

        It's all done in a very light hearted way, but still gets the job done...

        Irish solution to a global problem.....

          The only person he is cheating is himself. A friend of mine tries to do this regularly and it is frustrating when you know that he's got a six and tries to claim a four or five. Only game we play he can't cheat at is darts in the clubhouse afterwards

            if all else fails, put him against the wall and punch him hard 7 times...then when he complains say you only hit him 4 times.....see if he gets the message.

                  One guy I play is always looking for an excuse to get a better lie. Is this casual water or they can't expect me to hit out of this!

                  Another guy marks his ball on the front of the ball and replaces the ball so the coin is at the back of the ball. I always wondered why bother it's only an inch! But in a competition he would be DQ'd!

                    Hi guys,

                    I have had someone even worse than cheating himself in a match. It has been someone cheating on me and adding stokes to my play. It was on one of my work comps on my 5th tee shot par 4 I hit my driver shot stright out of bounds so reloaded. I ended up with a 6 on this hole for a point in stableford. He had the nerve to put me down for a 7 with no points. From this moment on I always record my scores and check to see what my card holder has put down.
                    The worst thing was is that the person in question was one of my customers. So to avoid wrecking a business relation over calling him a cheat. I had to ask him in such a manner, that I had to play a bit dumb to question it and asked for advice from him plus consulted my rule book. When in my mind I knew he done it delibrate. In the end he said he miss counted, yeah right.
