  • bad weather

    Hi Folks
I live in the Manchester which is the north west of England and right now it is really living up to its reputation ( rained for 10 days solid). Now myself and three other work mates who make up our regular 4 ball, all work 12 hour nightshift on a 4-on 4-off rota . becuase of the high stress involved in our jobs we decided our only outlet ( apart from drinking and the usual puch-up) would be to take our golf more seriously than in the past. so, we decided ,last autumn, that we would play every week , right through the winter.
We have braved Hail, gales, rain, gales and rain, gales and hail, snow, sub zero frost, thunder and lightning, and more rain. We never cancelled and we always played a full 18 holes. but after a long winter and the last ten days of solid rain we all threw in the towel and said enough is enough.

by the way, if you ever play in a lightning storm.....Tee off with a 1 iron, even god can't hit a 1 iron .

What i would like to know is , what is the worst weather you guys have played in and at what point did you say " sod this i'm off to the pub ".?

i would love to hear your bad weather tales so get back to me.

    Regards .....Terry

    Re: bad weather

    hi terry
im a manchester lad as well and the worst weather i played in was this year in early april. we had a works comp at heaton park and light drizzle at tee off gradually turned to torrential rain by the 4th hole and it stayed like that for the remainder of the round. everyone other than people playing our comp walked off course when i got back to the changing rooms and stripped off even my boxers were soaking wet through!
only consolation i shot a 38 stableford and my team won by 1 point!
only played in short sleeves once this year!

      Re: bad weather

      hi slater .

It seems that since last november i have either been frozen to the point where i can no longer grip my club ( even with wearing padded mits between shots ), or soaked to my undies. but i suppose thta's the price we pay.

I was supposed to play Heaton park this week, but the weather put an end to that.

      Thanks for the reply .....Terry.

If you ever fancy a round at Boysnope park , Irlam. ( my local ) just let me know .......

            Re: bad weather

Worst weather I have ever played in was up in Montana, on course that had just opened after being closed for the winter. Probably a 40+/- mph wind, with rain, ice, and snow blowing horizontally. The chill factor was some where near 0*F. We quit after 15 holes and retired to the RV to wait out the storm, and thaw out. Of the different types of weather encountered, I have to say I dislike the wind more than any other type of weather to golf in. GJS

              Re: bad weather

              Hi Terry,

I cant decide on which was my worst game of golf in bad weather as we have had so much in the past 6 months and having my golf club that is situated in Wales it seams that it is consistantly raining. So I have choosen 1 which have forced me not to finish.

Woke up one sunday morning in January 06 It was fantastic weather Sun was out but it was - 5 deg C. So I called the pro shop too see if the greens could be played on and to my susprise things were normal and I booked a round straight away. Anyway got to the club dressed in thermals and weather gear just to keep warm, then tee'd of the first thinking to myself this is great sun is out its cold but the air is so fresh which lifted my spirits. I par'd this hole and when I got to the 9th my score was 43 strokes. I was over the moon as the first nine is always my worst and if the back nine I done the same, then I would be nine strokes under my best score so I was starting to get excited.

After finishing the 10th on a par the weather started to change and by the end of the 11th fog had set in with visability down to about 10 foot. So changed ball to a yellow one and with knowing that no one was in front of me I carried on as the fog wasn't going to stop me from my best score. Played the next 2 holes then when on the 14th to my worst nightmare it started snowing and by the time I go to the 15th it was sticking to the ground. So I had no choice but to pick up my ball and retire dishartend to the club house. At that moment I felt like crying and to this day it is still in my mind.

Also Terry thats a great course you play on as I pass it every day going to work and have often been tempted to call in sick to play it especially when the weathers great.

              Have fun
              Cheers
              Mark

                Re: bad weather

                Hi mark

Sorry you had to quit such a promising round. But some good has come out of it...........You have experienced a hot spot ( no pun intended ).
from now on when you play , you will be able to the recall the feelings and the mindset that gave you that hot spot , and hopefully reproduce it more often.

                Thanx for the reply ........Terry
