i found your advice useful although a little comlicated but what do you mean by aftermarket shaft?
sorry for all the questions but this will be the first driver that i buy myself with my own money and i want to make sure i get the right setup so that i do not waste my money
Wow, Your current driver has less then 8.5 of loft?

I just made a driver switch this year from a Taylor Made 320 driver to an Adams RPM Redline, . I think you would be much better off to go with a 430-460 head and .830 core. I found a good deal on the Adams off ebay for $70(with the 430Q and the Dual drivers I think they are trying to faze them out), I know you can get one under $100 or I think the cs3 Ben Hogans are also in that range and have read a few good reviews on them. For me the Adams driver is about 15-20 yds longer then the 320 TM and a ton more forgiving.

Anyway, the s-90 shaft is TaylorMade factory shaft it is stiff but plays a lot like what most other shaft manufacturers would call firm. So a little stiffer then a standard regular. Now an after market shaft would be one you would buy seperate and install your self (Graffloy or Fujikura etc.)

      Re: Shaft flexes

i understand what you're sayin but wouldnt that cost me more in the long run if i need to buy a new driver plus a new shaft and being 15 and not having much money of my own i wasnt looking to spend much more than ₤100.

plus my other worry with an after market shaft is who would i get to fit it for me??

the more back spin you have the straiter it will go because the more backspin the less sidespin and the lessbackspin the more sidespin affectcs it. but too much backspin and the ball will balloon up killing your distance. i wouldn't reccomend anything over 5,000 rpms.

and the irons have higher loft and go striater but that is not because of the loft, it is because of the backspin and because of the steeper swing path.
Uhhh, what? It is because of the loft, that the short irons go straighter. The more the loft, the more the backspin. As you've accurately pointed out, the more the ball spins back, the less it can spin sideways. Now, loft is one reason, the steeper plane helps, too. But loft is the larger determiner - not plane.

I've gotta disagree here, to a point. You can swing pretty flat, and still get a straight flight, assuming your clubs are setup properly. But an overly flat swing will bring a lot of shots to the hook side. Not because you're flat, but because you've now go the lie angle playing way, way toe up. Bend 'em down, and you can swing as flat as you like. Just like you could bend over way, way too far, and leave everything out to the slice side. But I'm getting off topic.

Yes, adam, moving up 5 or 6 degrees will show you some straightening effects. However, again, you're operating with only one piece of the puzzle.

What you're looking to do is to buy a loft that maximizes your launch angle for your swing speed. You must hit up on the ball pretty well to get 280 yards out of an 8.5° driver (assuming, of course that it's truly 8.5°). You may only need to switch shafts - keep the head.

You really need to figure out your swing speed, and figure out your launch angle. This will point you in the direction of which loft to buy.

          Re: Shaft flexes

well as for keeping the head i want to change the head because i find the head really small as it is only 300cc and would something like a 400cc or 460 not be more forgiving?

            Re: Shaft flexes

Sorry sort of miss read your post, yes the 44o head will be a lot more forgiving and it is a good idea to up grade.

As for the shafts also I was not recomending after market shafts just definning the term. Though I think previous posters were pointing out that the terms regular, stiff, etc in describing flexes of shafts are not an industry wide standard but rather they are terms which the indivdual companies decide to use on their shafts, So, a stiff s-90 shaft maybe the exact same flex as a regular Graffloy blue shaft (actually from what I read the Regular Graffloy shaft is probably stiffer). I have also seen a number of opinions that TaylorMade and Callaway (not sure about Cobra) Shafts play less stiff (or soft) then what they are marked. So when you start asking wether I need a stiff or regular or x stiff shaft it depends what shaft your talking about. I assume you are talking about the factory shafts of Cobra. Since I have not swung them it is hard to tell how accurate their use of the terms "stiff or regular".

Now given your 280 distance which I assume is total driving distance and on your good swings. On most shafts I would guess you would need a stiff shaft.

              Re: Shaft flexes

I think your best bet is a club fitting. If you have a clubfitter or pro shop near by they can have you hit a few balls with a launch monitor and take a lot of the guess work out of what you need. It is usually free. This will determine your swing speed, launch angle, and ball speed. They will suggest the appropriate shaft, loft and length of club for you based on this info and your build and swing. At that point it is just a matter of what clubhead you like and feels good to you. Good luck.

I'm not sure of European sites, but an American site that will ship overseas is www.myostrichgolf.com

I'm partial to the Aggressive nRAGE. I'm really hitting my 78g X flex well (even with my tiny carry, compared to your swing). But the kicker is that if you need it, it comes in XX and XXX flexes.

There are plenty of good shafts that can be had for around $70 USD. I like the Aggressive and AccuFLEX offerings, myself. Although there's Aldila (home of the NV), Graman, True Temper, Grafalloy (Home of the blue), Harmon, SMT, Harrison (their striper line is popular), Stulz (the most expensive shaft I've seen in a while), Accra... quite a few choices, obviously, and I'm sure I forgot some companies.

                        hey whats up??
as far as the Cobra SZ 440, I have one. I wanted to get it in regular but I read in reviews that the regular stock shaft on the SZ 440 is to whippy. Any way, even the stiff shaft is not all that stiff so I feel that stiff flex is the way to go. The shaft I am talking about is the stock Graphite Designes YS-5.1. By the way, the driver is very nice and LOUD!!! haha. Good luck!
