A slice occurs when the clubhead approaches the ball on a out-to-in swing path. Your divots will confirm this , do they point left of the intended target ?????.
Generally speaking a slice is more noticeacble with the longer clubs, so my guess is , you are slicing your drives.
To elimate slices you not only have to train yourself to swing on a in-to-out swing path, but also improve the position of the clubface through impact. I am going to list some checks for you to do. Grip: check that you can only see two knuckles on the back of your left hand when you grip the club. try not to grip the club too tightly alignment: always align your body to the target line. REMEMBER:if you aim for a slice , you will hit a slice. Check that your shlouders aren't open at address (at address place a club a across your knees, then your hips and then your shoulders. all three should point to the target.
Backswing: if your back swing is too flat then your shoulders and arms will force the clubhead forwards ( creating a looped downswing ) .
get a pro to check your swing asap. he will be able to tell straight away which swing or set up fault is causing your slice.......good luck mate. keep us informed of your progress.....Regards .Terry
correction to tpg. when you align the club across your shoulder hips and knees it should be PARALLEL to the target line not pointing at it. Think of railroad tracks. You club head is on the outside track pointing directly at the target and your feet are on the inside track pointing parallel and left of the target. A common mistake is to align your body line (or inside track) towards the target line (or outside track). This in itself can cause an outside to inside swing because your are infact aligned right of the target and your brain is trying to get the clubhead going towards the target.
it was completely unnecassary to correct tpg ( especially as he was right). He has helped me on many occasions and would not post a reply if he didn't think that he could help somebody.
I play off a 1 h/cap now and reason for this is the patience and encouragement tpg has given me over the years.
Believe me, I meant no offence to anyone. I guess I was trying to make the point that many right handers tend to err in their alignment to the right of the target. Artford, I didn't realize you are close to a scratch golfer. It seems a bit unusual that you would have developed a slice, unless you normally hit a fade.
No offence taken msklar.
you r of course correct, many right handed golfers do tend to aim right of the target.
As for aftford . He dosn't slice ( he as a long wide draw ), but he sustain a nasty eye injury last year and we have been working together on the range to help him retain his feel for the corrct take away..
so in this case the swing has change from a slightly in to out swing with a slightly closed clubface to an outside inside swing with an open clubface. As mentioned in other posts, to get your feel back for the correct inside-inside swing path, try hitting a ball with a shoe box 1-2 inches outside the ball and aim for the inside quarter of the ball. Hope this helps, Mike.
