Seeking advice on Hybrids...

    Seeking advice on Hybrids...

    Looking at the clubs in my bag, I realized that I hardly ever use the 5W. I cut down my 3W and added a steel shaft. So I usually use the 3W of the Fairway.

    I'd like to replace my 5W and 3i. I was thinking about buying one Hybrid to replace both of'em.

    I'm not sure about the loft of the Hybrid. Should I look for a 19*?

    Whats your experience with Hybrids?

    not too sure about hybrids..... but here is a link to find a local demo day in your area and try them out there to find out, that is why they have them.

      Hi ralph,

      I f you wan't to replace your 5w & 3i then you need around 20degrees, you will still have an extra club that you can put in. If it was me I would have another wedge, like a gap wedge 50 to 52 degrees or a high lob wedge 62 to 64 degrees. This should give you an advantage on you chip shots around the green.

        I carry one hybrid club it is a nike cpr 21deg.I hit the club really well but I did not take out my 3 wood.I don't carry a 5 wood.I think the 21 deg should replace a 4 or 3 iron but I still carry them both.I find it easier to it a punch shot with a regular club and most the courses I pay have alot of trees and what not.I am thinking of replacing my 3 wood with a 18 deg hybrid but I am still waiting to hit one a bit first....

          Your 5W will be anywhere from 17°-19°, and your 3i will be anywhere from 19°-21°. So a 19° will meet you halfway. Longer than your 3i, shorter than your 5W. Remember, hybrids are meant to replace long irons, and their clublength should reflect this. In other words, they should follow the length progression coming up from your 5,4, and 3 irons, not down from 1W, 3W, and 5W.

          My experience is that they're wonderfully versatile. Great off the tee (like little fairway woods), excellent out of the rough (unless the grass is knee-high - then I like to drop a 9 iron in there), and a good choice when your ball is on the collar up against the rough (like I found myself a couple of times this past weekend). Then you use it like a hot-faced putter.

          My hybrid of choice is the Innovex Hybrid (http://innovexgolf.com/hybrids/index.asp), which I sold to try the Ashton Xbrid (http://ashtongolf.com/prod_xbrid.htm). Currently vying for a spot is the PureFit VooDie (http://www.purefitgolf.com/voodie.htm). I'm cranking the 19° quite nicely with an AccuFLEX Icon HL. If I ultimately decide to change hybrids again, I'll go back to the Innovex.

            The cut down 3W works really nice. It's an older Mizuno model, the T-Zoid Forged. The Clubhead is fairly heavy and small.
            It helps me to slow down my swing and concentrate more on impact quality. I get 240 yrds on the sweetspot, those Mizunos are awesome.

            I was considering to do the same with the 5W, make it the same length as the 3W and add a steel shaft as well. But I realized, as mentioned, I hardly use it.
            And since the Mizunos have a fairly small head, they get a bit tricky in the rough. I prefer to use a Iron to get back on the fairway.

            So, my thinking is to look into Hybrids, a Club I can use to get out of the rough and would give me a distance between 3W and 4i therefore I could drop the 3i and simplify my Bag. The 5W is a 18* the 3i I'm not sure.

            I guess I'll try a 19* from Ebay and see where it goes . How does the Ball flight of Hybrids compare to Wood/Iron?

              my hybrid experience has been good, ive had the same one i got out of my first set, that came from walmart..yupeee, but now its all dinged up and i got a few extra bucks so im looking for a new one

              the ball flight is good, high and soft or low and runner, i can control it good, it came with a steel shaft but im thinking about getting a graphite shafted one

              you will definately benefit from one

                Due to the nature of the hybrid, it's a higher flight than the irons. The center of gravity is further back in a hybrid - so it's necessarily higher.

                  i just ordered a 14* cleveland halo hybrid from TGW, should be here thursday, if i like it im gonna buy a 19* and take out my 5 wood and old 3 hybrid, my current fairway woods are super stupid design, good off tee but suck arse off the ground

                    I went on Ebay and got myself a 18* Cleveland Quadpro launch Iron. Got it pretty cheap and the reviews are fairly good.
                    So, I'll be looking forward to its arrival.*S* And then hitting some balls.

                      I though I add some final words.
                      I got my 18* Cleveland Quadpro launch Iron which I ordered from ebay and took it for a spin to the Driving range.
                      Interesting club, alot of weight in the head and fairly offset. Gives me the feeling of having a "launcher" in my hands.
                      Easy to hit, pretty forgiving. Ball flight is high, higher than my 5w. I assume it is because of hitting "down" on the ball.

                      So far I like what it does. I hope I can take it to the course next week.
                      Overall, I think the days of my 5W are counted.
