I was speaking to a guy at the range tonight, who just had a lesson with the pro. He was rather agrivated and not striking the ball too well. He said he could not understand why after a lesson his game seemed to deteriorate rather than improve. I said that I would think it doesnt improve until you get to understand what you have been thought. He then went on to say that no matter how much instruction you take that you will never be told the full faults in your swing. "Its a money making situation for these guys and they will keep bringing you back to take your hard earned cash from you" was his final comment. I said I thought he was being unfair and with that, he duly bent his sand wedge across his knee!!. I was in an uncontrollable state of laughter.

I don't think they do, golf in my opinion is an never ending learning process
which makes it fun, challenging and very difficult to master. Some people don't have the temperment for the game. Too bad for him. It also doesn't sound like he learned very much from the pro. -

I certainly hope they do hold back, not because they are after our cash but because there is a limit to how many ideas we can take in and work on.
I'm sure Shooting for Par would agree
that if your grip is rubbish and the rest of the set up stinks then discussing wrist positions halfway back and at the top (as an example) is rather futile.

I was going to edit my original post to add that the average person can only learn so much in one session, but bdbl beat me to it. Unfortunately I think this is a regular opinion around many golf clubs, simply because very few people are abitious enough to want to get better, or in fact put the effort in to training................Not to teach people to suck eggs......but this is why some people have good jobs and others just accept the cards they are delt in life.
The guy is right in one respect a good pro will only show you one, maybe two swing faults at a time...usually fixing the most important first. Ever tried to play with more than one or two swing thoughts it always turns into a nightmare.
A good pro will not always teach text book either and work with the person and his needs and ability. You always suffer after lessons until the swing changes settle down and then the distance etc comes back.
But at the end of the day it comes down to a persons ambition to get better or just settle for what they have.
Me, I am a sucker for hard work.

you right golf is a never ending process,BUT PRO NEVER WILL TEACH YOU ALL IF THEY DO THEY MAY FIND ANOTHER JOB TO BRING BACON HOME!!Comment

I used to try and teach young people to bowl. I found that what I was trying to convey was a feeling I received from my muscles as I went through the bowling motions. It is impossible to convey that type of feeling so the instructor tries to find something that he can get his student to do that will allow the muscles to work properly. I have been trying to learn how to release the club head for years. I had no luck until I read about the "RHD" It's amazing but by actively keeping the right hand cupped you actually release the club head through the ball instead of at it. After two days I felt my swat dissapear to be replaced by the strangest feeling of my hands turning over through the impact area. Go figure.Comment

VERY VERY VERY few people want to pay for a lesson on how to grip the club, and the pros know this. That right there makes their job VERY hard WHen I was going for my first lesson I did not want to pay for that so what I did was bought a book, Tigers, and gripped it like that and on my first lesson the first thing he looked at was my grip and he said the grip was fine.Originally posted by bdblI certainly hope they do hold back, not because they are after our cash but because there is a limit to how many ideas we can take in and work on.

if they are that good then the referrels will bring home a lot of bacon and they would command more per lesson. I would never hold back. If Jim comes and gets a lesson from me and he has 8 golfing buddies he plays with at random, they all se him improving and ask questions, then I get referrels because they witness my teaching working through their buddy Jim.Originally posted by B11NONGOLFComment
