The big difference in a good vs. bad shot for me is the pure solidness of contact with the ball. No club shatter or dull frequencies, no club bouncing, no thin glancing blows...just pure compression and that slight spring/rebound affect in the hands.
And this is a better feeling in a good forged iron. Drivers have this dull "pang" that does not translate to a feeling...you have to hear it to know it was good.
And Cavity-back irons completly damp this feeling to some degree. You can still feel it when it is good, but nothing like forged.
The longer the iron, the better the feeling too. I don't know if it's a macho thing that you get this pure contact with long iron knowing this is going a long way, or if it is truly a physically different feeling, but I really look forward to hitting a 2-iron from the deck.
