Dont be fooled by all the ad hype on how a driver can magically make you hit straight shots. The ball only goes straight if YOU the hitter aim & swing correctly. How many ads have you seen about Phils Fusion driver well we saw it in action on Sunday

Re: What Phil showed us
Very valid point Ttime, Lefty's self destruction on the 18th shows us just how easy it is to lose focus at critical times, even if everything is going in our favour. The game can truly become a mental contest at that level, and sometimes we compete more against self doubt and insecurity than the other players. At that point equipment does not provide the competive edge, we maintain it "between the ears".

Re: What Phil showed us
Remember, that the next club he had was a 4w. It was in the wind and he had to get it past the corner uphill. There was no other choice...
But it's the US Open. If he laid back and played for the 5 to tie, tied and lost in the play-off, you would have seen 50x more complaints about that decision then this one...

Re: What Phil showed us
I find it hard to second guess the driver off the Tee. He hits a good drive he has par. A bad drive and still 98% of the time he has boogie at worst. I do not think laying back in anyway garuntees par and a player has to at least give himself the best chance to win the tournament, and at the same time assure himself of the playoff.
His poor decision in my view was playing a high risk 2nd shot instead of punching out to the fairway. That would have got him a playoff and taken double out of the picture.

Re: What Phil showed us
Phil will never be asked to join Mensa. Many times he has lost golf tournaments with poor course management. It is entertaining to watch his "go for broke" game plan however.

Re: What Phil showed us
If you have ever seen the movie "Tin Cup" you have to agree that there are guys who have this ingrain psyche that makes them "go for it" when all the world would choose another option. I think it is very close to compulsive gambling or eating disorders. There are times when they just can't help it and Phil is one of these guys.
In one of the post game shows one of the commentators thought he should "see a shrink" and i agree. Just look at how many times he has choked or made bad decisions under pressure. All the Rick Smith's and Dave Pelz's in the world cannot fix an ingrain tendency that is obsessive compulsive. A little time on the couch would do him a lot of good.

Re: What Phil showed us
Pelz says there are 5 games in the game of golf. The "Power" game, the "Short" game the "putting" game, the mind game and the management game.
Phil showed us his power game, mind game and mangement game need work.
Geoff was lucky to be waiting on the sidewalk while the trainwreck(s) went down.
I feel worse for Monty.

Re: What Phil showed us
what Phill showed me,
If you got a good thing going, 2 drivers in your bag that brought you the Masters Trophy, WHY mess with a good thing? HE screwed up because he had no confidence in his driver which was all over the place. Mentally he was out, I bet you he was wishing he had 2 drivers in his bag on the 18th Tee. This would have eliminated the left part of the fairway, trees & the hospitality tents!
Geoff O's last drive & chip/pitch on the 18th was magic, under that kind of pressure, brilliant.
