To get a handicap you need to purchase a GHIN card. These are usually sold at any golf course.
I believe they cost around $20. Then after every round of golf you play you turn your score in. Here we enter them ourselves into the computer at the pro shop or online from home.
I believe you need 10 eighteen hole rounds to have an established handicap.
If your not playing in a league or any tournaments that use handicap you won't need an official handicap. But if you want a handicap for playing with friends that do have handicaps you can find software on the internet to keep track of your rounds and figure your handicap.
Handicap is based off the courses slope and course rating. Those 2 numbers define the courses difficulty. And of course the last component is your score.
From there you can use a formula to find how many strokes you get on any course based on that courses slope and course rating.
