The benefit is that it keeps a constant grip pressure, it keeps your arms hanging ... and from that position you can move the club back smoothly.
In my experience as a teaching pro, for some people it does create more problems than benefits. Some people hover the club and tense up, some people pick it up from there on the way back ...
I think, like a lot of things in golf, it's down to personal preference. I don't hover the club off the ground and never have.
i think he hit it on the head.....it allows me to keep from tensing up...i find it better for me to waggle the club and then float it behind the ball...this may be crazy but I feel like i can get the club going on a better angle back then dropping the club back on the ground...i guess what i am saying is the club goes back at an angle and comes back through the ball.bring the club back down only to bring it back just doesent feel natural...of course this could change next week
