  • picking new clubs..HELP!

Well, its been awhile. I need everyones opinion.
Its time to upgrade my 15 yr old daughters clubs. She started playing in spring of 2005. We bought her a new set of Wilson clubs. Very inexpensive. The whole set including bag was 200.00 dollars. Last week she finally broke a hundred. Yes, my baby girl shot a 99. It was the way she shot that made me so proud. 55 on the front nine, then a 44 on the back. Really turned it around. In September she will play for her high school team. Which clubs should we get. Ping, Callaway, Wilson, Titleist?
Any advise would be appreciated. thanks

    HI,

Depending on budget, I think you should let her decide, the makes you mention are all good enough for her standard at the moment.

My only advice is let her choose what she like best, after all she has to use them and if she loves them it helps, also get them fitted and ajusted to her size and build, seek some professional advice.

    Hope this helps

    Aren't kids great

      What's up, Doc?

As the 'resident' clubbuilder (speaking of which, where ya been, Gord?), might I suggest going the component route?

Ian has already identified the trump card - getting the clubs fitted to her. This is the greatest consideration. Now, not all club builders are club fitters, but most club fitters are club builders. Still with me? Good.

Things to consider with her new (or new to her) clubs:

The main differences between mens' clubs and ladies clubs are three fold.

      1) Ladies clubs are 1" shorter. This decreases the swingweight by 2 points.
      2) Ladies clubheads are painted in 'girl colours'.
      3) Ladies clubs usually have lighter shafts.

What does this mean? This means that there really are no such thing as 'ladies clubs'. This also means that you can buy any set you like for your princess. Sure, you may have to get them reshafted, but it also opens up the world beyond the 6 OEM sets for ladies.

Now, you need to consider some things when buying her new clubs. What are you looking for? More control? Higher ball flight? Lower ball flight? More forgiveness?

Each can be addressed by certain club specs.

      More control: stiffer shafts
Higher ball flight: weaker lofts and/or head weight lower and back
Lower ball flight: stronger lofts and/or head weight higher and forward
More forgiveness: even weight distribution about the clubface

Consult with your local club maker to decide what may be the best option for your daughter.

Okay, well the search is over. We purchased some used Callaway X-16 Steelheads. Yes, she picked them. The driver is Callaway 454 in 11 degree with the ladys flex 55gram shaft. And yes, a Callaway bag. Teenage daughters....what do I say....

Callaway graphite shafts ladies flex. She is already 2 clubs longer than she ws before. It is almost a tragedy that I made her play with those zinc alloy cheap clubs she had before.

That was why I was asking. I do some club work and have found that most seniors and ladies, hit the ball longer and more consistantly with the graphite shafts. Just my 2 cents worth....hope she does well.
