  • GTO security issue

Please excuse my posting this thread in this site, but I am looking for feedback.

Over the last few days my pc at the office deteriorated to such a degree that I lost all I had on it. the machine even lost my profile and had to be reloaded with all programmes. My IT manager asked me if I had been visiting sites to which I told him of my affiliation with GTO and that I would check daily (through my own private email adress) for replies to posts. I was told that my activity on this site was responsible for infections which contaminated the pc. I argued that this would have to be a remote possibility as I was only reading posts which I would do on my own home machine daily and that this home machine does not give me a problem. Would anybody have knowledge on this, if so much appreciated

    Cheers.

company IT people always blame problems on your personal use of the machine! i run a scheduled virus check weekly and my system is spotless!

I agree, your company IT guy doesn't want to spend any time to diagnose the real issue.

Says it's because of personal use and moves on.

This true. IT people always blame anything having to do with the internet, it gives them an easy out. It however does not fix the problem, it could be thousands of different things. I also run a weekly virus check and have no issues with GTO.

Ask him how the "infections" got through the companies firewall and virus checker; while you are at it ask for a printout of the scan results.

            Hi Robert,

Just a few questions before I can comment on this but I do have a feeling it was probably a hardware problem.

Firstly what windows software and virus firewall does your work place use?

Next what was the first files that had seemed to be deleted i.e config docs autoexec (these would show a message on start up) word docs etc.

Also how was the machine running i.e on start up, shut down, and opening applications.
And finally did you see any error messeges.

If it was a virus which I think about 90 % of me thinks it wasn't as if your virus checker / firewall is the most upto date & only the newest virus that pose a real threat would get through. As with these types of virus the software developers know even before you will get one and raise a warning ie that worm virus in 2004 which caused havoc when xp first came on the market.
Also like all viruses you will get wierd error messages coming up every couple of minutes or at start up / shut down.

Your system guy is blaming GTO because he can't find a fault / or can't be bothered/ or probably he tried updating a program on the whole network that caused problems.
One thing which you can do for yourself is run a disk defrag as this will check your hardrive for errors and also give you an indication whether or not its on the way out (usually takes between 10 to 30 mins depending on size of disk i.e my 200 Gig takes 12 mins, but if it takes over an hour then request a new drive).

Hope it is of some use
            Cheers
            Mark

              Re: GTO security issue

As an IT guy, your IT guy is a lazy arse. A golf forum poses no security threat. Tell him to find the real cause.

                Re: GTO security issue

Yeah ... in my experience forums and public e-mail servcies are always the flogging-horse for IT folk. They seems to think that forums pose a threat to mankind when in fact the GTO hosts are well protected against viruses and most home & company users have anti-virus software.

Here's a great example that really struck home the point last year:
One of my teaching PC's went down and I was talking to the "IT Guy" while he took a look at my it was so slow. I mentioned how I downloaded a video from GTO ... I hadn't even finished the sentence when he piped up and told me THAT is what caused the problem - downloading from a forum. What I hadn't finished saying yet was I had downloaded the swing on my office PC which has firewalling, virus protection etc. and copied it onto a USB drive to put onto the teaching computer.

I'd rather trust a lawyer before I trust an IT Guy.

                  Re: GTO security issue

It seems to me that in this mercinary world in which we live , the higher your salary the less you want to work for it.....

But the reason i love this forum is because it is absolutely filled with people who give countless hours of advice to every golf related question that you can name and they do it all for FREE.

I suppose the old saying is true......knowledge is TRUE wealth.

                  cheers

                    Re: GTO security issue

Bill Gates designed PCs to wear out so you would have to buy a new one.

Everything we do on a PC is stored, a bit like Golf to much information and you crash.

                    Who designed viruses............................BG I think.

                    Just my pennies worth.

Apple MAC never get viruses as 99.9 % are designed to bring the downfall of the Microsoft monopoly as there is a lot of people hate being dictated to what sofware they must use. (Virus are probably created by apple personel).
