Yesterday I went for a practice and could hardly hit a ball. Today was not much better so I sat down, had a cold drink, took a deep breath and made myself go back to basics. Bingo.

So for me when I lose the swing perhaps its not what I'm doing wrong but what I'm not doing right.

However, I suspect that I'm not the only who when the wheels come off thinks "what did I do wrong" instead of "what do I do when its right" - a lesson I'm trying to learn.

Anyay, back to Monday's round. I played much better than usual but scored only slightly better, which leads to another question.

Why doesn't the score always reflect the way you play?

I've got some ideas why but would be interested to know other peoples thoughts and if you sometimes walk off thinking "I was playing better than that?".
You are not alone pal. Many times i have played out of my socks just to find that my playing partner who has played very poor only ends up a couple of shots behind me.

    cheers

Re: why do we lose our swing?

I would say the reason I lose mymy swing is because I never really knew how to swing. I just tried diffenert things and kept the things that worked but my swing was all feel, i never really knew what i was doing. when I would wake upi would feel different and therefore my swing was different.

now that i have learned different methods and mechanics of the swing I can always fall back to the basic techniques and i will not lose my swing again. I might play better somedays than others, but i will never lose my swing again.

LOL Not sure I was playing out of my socks - just better than usual.

I think my experience and your story probably illustrate that its not how well we play that makes the score but how much our poor shots cost us.

I was severely punished by my mistakes.

Interesting point about asking ourselves not what we did wrong but what we did that was right when trying to get our swing back. I wish I could recall what I did right about a good swing. Some have advised that we should remember what we did on a particularly good shot and try to reproduce that time after time. But we are not supposed or at least advised not to think about what we do in our swing except focusing on the target. Can you clarify?

Re: why do we lose our swing?

the hard part is that a bad swing, with perfect timing, will produce good shots. years ago I shot a 79 with double bogeys on 17, 18 while having a severely outside in swing but for some reason my timing was on that day

I can't always remember what I did on a good swing eitehr but my aim is to accept that, though not consistently or often enough, I can "do it right". In which case I also need to accept that I've probably hit a poor shot just because I do, as we all do to one extent or another, therefore there is probably nothing ("what did I do wrong") that I should try and fix right now.

I'm still working on this and unfortunately I don't always take what works on the practice ground out to the course and after a few poor shots not only does anxiety and tension creep in but I start fiddling and tinkering with the swing.

Thanks for the answer. Like you I'm also trying to wade through all the different advice and info and hopefully I'll be able to find something for myself that will be close to a consistent swing (and hopefully never lose it!). My problem also I feel is practising too many wedge shots and have forgotten squaring the club or finishing off the full swings. I therefore end up with too many push shots that scoot off to the right! I'll keep on trying.

Re: why do we lose our swing?

No body loses thier swing..lol...everybody gets out of position, which is why going back to basics usually fixes things, all it did was return you to position, or put you in a position you could work with. You may have thought your ball position, stance or any number of things didn't change, but something did, or you would be hitting pretty much the same. Every body has a comfort zone which allows THEM to hit acceptable shots most of the time, Tiger and other pros are just a little better at finding thiers then we do. When I start hitting bad shots, I first look at my grip, then ball position, then alignment, then posture in that order, usually one of them is off slightly, putting me out of my comfort zone, get it back to where it should be, returns me to solid ball striking. So to answer your question, you need to find YOUR basics that are in YOUR comfort zones and remember them or better yet write them down, when your swing gets off as you say, go back to them and get your self back in position.

Golf instructions are general at best, guidelines, everyone well be slightly different, they all (basics) have to work together. I would never try to swing like Tiger, I am not as strong as him, not built like him am I am no where near as young as him, so why would I try to setup and swing like him. Now having said that I have deveoped my setup and ball position following basic fundelmentals that suit me and allow me to make solid shots shaped the way I like most of the time, if tiger tried to use my ball position and grip, he would be all over the golf course and I would beat his butt and take his money, because he would be out of position for his swing and out of his comfort zone. Just my take on this, take it for what it is worth, but I believe it to be true.

Re: why do we lose our swing?

I started this post because it is an issue that hits me at times.Well today I played eighteen as follows: Every drive long and straight with on ly as much as awedge or 8 iron in. From these positions, I either shanked to the right or topped. I was so mad with myself. After the round I went to the range and yes, no problem with these irons. I think I am looking for the ball before it is struck, hence coming up off the shot. This brings your confidence down so quickly it is hard to get it back. Any comments gratefully appreciated. The only consolation was I won the longest drive
                    Cheers Rob

Re: why do we lose our swing?

the real reason we loose our swings, Golf was invented by satan in order to torture us. If it was impossible for us to ever do it right we would not keep trying, therefore not enduring the torture, but since we occasionally get it, we will endure the torture

Re: why do we lose our swing?

Robert, I lost my swing after a lay-off (to which I got some great advice on this forum). I practiced four-five months hitting thousands of balls. Still could not get it back. Aftford suggested a PGA pro. I had my 3rd lesson with him today. It helped immediately!!! My problem was in address and set-up. I don't know how something that on the surface can look so simple be so @#$*&! frustrating!! I'm back playing now, and like Aftford also suggested, when it goes again I will look to the basics, and that with me is set-up.

Hit 'em Robert, just hit 'em.
