  • I met tiger yesterday

    Hi Folks,

No not tiger woods. let me explain. i went to an open comp on my own and met two other lads. They did not know each other. One individual was so pleasant I thought he was going to be great company.he startrd level par after 6 and one over after 8. By the time he got to the tenth he had a treble and double bogey. This is when the fun started. on the eleventh he drove ob. and threw the driver up in the air. At this stage all conversation was terminated by him and I was left to chat with the other individual in the group. By now he had to be reminded that he did not have the honour on the tee box and muttered "who gives a damn! I was so relieved when the round was over. I have to say that he took the enjoyment away from me and the other player and introduced a level of tension that was no use for anyone. Hope you dont meet too many of these guys!!
    Cheers,
    Rob

As our pro likes to tell these immature club throwers, "You aren't a good enough golfer, to get that mad over a bad shot". That really tee's off the club-thrower.

I try to stay positive..I play in a little Monday night league and a guy there tends to throw clubs,at the end of the season we have an outing and a cookout and present a few things. One of the guys had got a club from a garage sale and gave it to this guy to practice throwing..We all got a kick out of it.It is strange that the people you play with affect your game..I played this year with a friend and two other guys I had not met. They shot in the 70's and I wound up with an 81 witch was my best score ever.that was no mulligans and no gimmes playing the ball down.I try to promote a good atmosphere for my foursome and encourage everyone to do the same.....

Hi Vp, I just took it in my stride and played my own game. It was just uncomfortable to be with a "knowall" who knew nothing

              Re: I met tiger yesterday

              Hey Rob.

I'm taking this off-topic, but I'd like your advice on something as a fellow Paddy. You mentioned you turned up to an open comp on your own. I'm at the level now where I'm breaking 100 - fairly often (still capable of a 106/110 ish if things go badly), but not manageing to break through the 90 barrier. I was toying with the idea of popping to a few mid-week open comps on my own to get out and play more. I'm hitting shots I've never been able to hit in my life (250 yrd drives, 80 yrd wedges shots that stick to the green, handful of ups&downs in a round, hitting under 36 putts), but my score isn't coming together and I believe it's because I'm not getting out to play often enough - generally once a week, maybe 3 times a fortnight is the most I play... I'm not consistent because I'm always playing cold. You know yourself - to get your eye in you need to be playing hurling or football a few times a week to get into the pace of things, I'm not into the pace of my golf at all.

My question - how good do you need to be to turn up to these open comps? If I go around in a 110 is it bad manners on my part? Can you just ring up and request that they throw your name in at a time - you don't need a playing partner? As you can see I'm very much a novice so your advice would be great.

              Thanks.

                Hi Del,
This is the best way to improve your game. Go on your own is no prob. Lots of people do it. Ring and ask for a slot for one. This is a normal request for pro shops. Their phones never stop ringing. If they did, they wouldnt be around for long! its a good way of meeting people and the more you meet, the more golfing partners you will find. We all have to start somewhere. After a while it will become a normal part of your routine to join others that you do not know. You might meet some dipsticks, but always go for yourself and your goal of improvment. Hope this helps

                  Thanks Rob.

I appreciate that. I hope to bite the bullet in the next fortnight and try one.... I'll let you know if I have any dignity left after it.

                    Re: I met tiger yesterday

                    Del,

Go for it for two reasons, ie, networking and improving your game.

One needs to test himself on other courses and in other competitions. Playing on the one course can breed complacency.

I find my game improves on other courses. It's a challenge two fold, to beat the course and my peers. I tend to work and apply myself more so in this situation.

You did well to keep your cool mate. It can really put you off your game when others are wound up.

Can I just ask though because I think I have missed it.......

What is the relevance of the title to the thread? haha!

If you still have trouble trying to understand then I will try and post again in a fashion suitable to ypour intelligence level

What did the poor guy do to you?

Pots and kettles come to mind.
