    Re: discussion for all.

Its all mental, if the sheep is acting baaaaaaaaaaaadly spank it, just pull the wool over your eyes for the next shot, and yell foooooooooooooooooooour. Then forget why you play this game and it comes back, for a few days and leaves again.

        Re: discussion for all.

Someone gave me a book by Earnest Jones "Swinging Into Golf" which gave me some ideas on what I should be doing as far as hitting the ball. I figured if a one legged guy could play better than me, then his book had what I needed to know. After that it was just playing a lot, with some practice thrown in when I was not working my tail off to make ends meet. A side from that book, I am a self taught golfer. It took me 6, maybe 7 years to achieve par, and I have had the same swing Jones discribed in that book (close to it anyway) since reading it. It has served me quite well for many years. GJS

            hi aft and o'keeffe
i think one big problem that so many people have a set of matched irons and play well with them but pick a driver by the reviews of how far someone hits it and not if its matched to his irons, also there irons are mostly steel shafts and drivers graphite and a diffrent swing weights, some driver are 1% closed or 1% open and some guys and girls dont know that, try hitting a fade with a 1% closed set club. also lie on a driver is so importand as the lie changes the angle of the groves and how a ball spins so much more than with the irons. very few out there with a full matched set of clubs. if your driver not working and irons do try and see a fitter and have the swing weight checked, lie and shaft flex too.
hope it stops some from changing there swing to hit that drive down the middle when there swing is ok to start with.

                Hi Bill,
I've just order ben hogans book, it came yesterday, started reading straight away. I've read the Grip now a couple of times and treid it out in the house. There is a damm good feeling to it. Over the weekend I'll be reading the rest and be out on the range trying it all out. Can't wait.
                Cheers, Ian

                  hi ian
hogan's 5 fundamentals are still the best starting point for any new golfer and ones like me thats need to fix the faults that sneek in after 30 years golfing.

                    yeh,
I've had a rest fron Golf of 20 years, and since starting again the end of summer last year I just don't seem to get any consistance into my game. Around the green, Chiping Putting, are not the problem I can get up and down quite well, the old touch is still there, my main problems are from the tee and conistancey on approach shots. The feel off the new grip from the book feel good, I found that I had my right hand too far under the club.
We'll see if I can get the rest of my form back using the book, otherwise I'll be booking a lesson or two.

I struggle with a hardcore slice, I have had lessons, tried drills, and tons of other things. It has gotten better but it is still out of control most of the time I hit driver. When I hit 3 wood it is not there, but pick up irons and its back..........

                          My dad said to me one day on the course;
'Why do you tee up your irons on the tee on par 3's and when you use them off the tee on par 4's when you practise them off the deck on the range and hit so many shots with your irons off the fairway?'
After he said this to me i tried hitting them without a tee and i was more accurate.

The thing that has helped me after playing golf for 3 years this week, is when ever I ahve a bad shot or bad round dont blame it all on the swing!! Because im a perfectionist and always have to catch it out the middle and my swing has to look spot on I always start working on my swing as soon as i play a bad round, but i need to realise that sometimes your timing is 100th of a second out and you have to work with what you have on the day.

Im getting there :-)! Because otherwise I never gain much consistentcy. One day I shoot +2 next day I shoot +10

A very kind, unselfish and informative young man made this suggestion about two months to read Dr Bob's book. Well bless you Andy. This book has given me the tools not to think of my swing during the round. Admittedly I've had some hiccups in this time but I am learning from them. One thing I'm finding hard to do is transferring 'the feel' of coming inside on the first move of the downswing from the practice to the actual comp round. For those who care - I had a lesson last week - whoa whoa. The hard work since the previous lesson on my latest swing key is working. My swing is in between the lines. I still have to be mindful of the first movement of the down swing but once engrained, I can speed my swing up. Ye ha.Nicole

[quote=aftford]What was the breakthrough you made that finally made things click. what are you still struggling with and what have you tried to correct it. [ /quote]

                                Hello, aftford:

I've always struggled with consistently hitting the fairways with the drive. I haven't keep regular stats on this, but my impression is that when I don't drive into the fairway, I also don't score well.

I've tried the Ben Hogan swing, dabbled with TGM, but as of last Friday, discovered the "New Golf Swing" though another thread on this site. That method made an immediate improvement in my drives and other clubs. (I posted in another thread that in yesterday's round, I cut 11 strokes off my previous score.)

So, even though I need to improve, I'm more mentally positive, now, about improving my golf game.

As for putting and chipping, I appreciate the recommendations about Dave Peltz's two "bibles," and will add them as funds allow.
