My golf society is planning in 3 club challenge over 27 holes.

Does the 3 clubs include the putter or is it 3 clubs + the putter?
For me, it would probably be 5 iron, PW and putter if the putter is included as the 3rd club.
If it isn't I'd switch out my PW for an 8 iron and put a sandwedge in. -

If you are daring:
3w, 7i (or what ever is your average mid iron after a good teeshot), sw. Putt with your 3w.
Otherwise if you have to have a putter:
4i (or what ever is your average 2-shot long iron to your par 4's ends up being), sw, putter.
Most par 5's are 3 shots. 2 4i's, and a sw.
Most par 4's will be 2 4i's. If you know you are going to tee it off and be outside the normal 4i range, then play a slice to take some off, or play the draw to add some.
Par 3's are going to be the real challange. Practice the 1/2 4i. Choak up and use lots of wrist break/release. Play it as a slice and this takes a lot off it. It will come in low, but you have your sw to get you out of all your troubles. Most longer par 3's your 4i will be just right.Comment

4 iron as i can hood it into a 3 iron or open it like a 5, and 8 iron as i can make it a 7 and a 9 doing the same and it cover most shot from 195 to a 35 yrd chip. = my broomhandled putter,
if greens were flat i'd use a 4, 7 and wedge and putt with wedge, but hitting the middle of ball your thr leading edge of the edge.

If it was me, i'd take my hybrid 2-iron, 7 iron and SW. That'll cover distances from 240 yards to virtually nothing. I often use my hybrid 2-iron off the green to putt with instead of the 5-wood a lot of people use, so I'd putt with that no problem.Comment

When I make it up to Bandon, Oregon to visit, there is a club there has a weekly 3 club tournament that we usually play in. My clubs of choice are a 16* wood, 6i, and my putter. I would think a club off the tee that would give you 200 + yards, that could be used for other fairway shots would be the way to go for a distance club.
I have seen some ingenious bags made up of shorten 39" drivers, or 2 woods, a 7 wood, and a putter. In one group we golfed with, a guy had replaced his putter with one of those chippers that look like a putter. He putted pretty well with it as I recall, while not scaring up the green. His reasoning was the ball skips off off the putter face anyway, so why not use a simular club that would give more yardage when needed. GJSComment

i would take 7iron pw and putter. I'm comfortable hitting 7 off the tee about 150yds, and hitting it until i get within 110yds., then using pw.Comment

I hope I have the right to change my mind on this. On second thought, I would use driver, 6 iron and 52 degree wedge. The reason for my change of clubs is this: I pulled my old driver out of the closet and chucked it in my bag on the way to the driving range. It's a pretty small driver(250cc) so I gave it a try off the grass. I discovered I can get a nice straight shot out to about 250 yards off the ground. Hey, I liked it so much I left it in my bag for my next round on the course. I'm calling it my KZG, 9.5 degree, number 1 fairway wood. It's quite an addition to my 3 and 5 fairway woods and it's nice to get on the green with the second shot on a par 5 too!Originally posted by canadian_man_44Comment

You should be okay with your 7 iron, SW and putter. Whatever combination you select, let us know the results after the tournament. The information should come in handy when our turn comes around.

I'd go with 7i, gap wedge, and putter. For some reason my gap wedge is becoming one of my most useful clubs. I keep meaning to try this 3-club thing. I'm betting my score would be better than with a full bag. But I've yet to do it.Comment

Played one of these at my old home track about 9 yrs ago and went with 1, 5 & 9 irons and putted with my 1 iron.
Was good fun, had a net 73 from memory. Almost decided over the frothies afterwards that I would only ever use 3 clubs for the rest of my life...
That soon changed once I sobered up next day...
