  • 5 year old son

I bought him a few clubs and a nice bag 2 weeks ago and brought him to the driving range 3 times since.
I've decided to let him grip the club anyway he feels comfortable..he does have his right hand lower than left so thats a start.
And He puts the ball in middle of stance.. like a x-mas tree i told him he does actually stand up to ball and say..like an x-mas tree)...forming a triangle..well a rough one..
I reckon thats all I can show a 5 year old..
Is there any other advice you guys can give me regarding kids golf ?.
I ask him does he want to go play golf and leave the decision up to him...I dont think I'll drag him along...ever...

I would advise teaching the correct grip as this can affect the whole swing. Also the correct ball postition and body alignment are advisable too; try to get enough things right before you work on the swing.

The younger they are the more flexible they seem to be so you can teach them the correct turning mannerism more efficiently. I would not let him take the club back more than hip height at first. The important part is letting him hit the ball forward. If he tries a full swing he will have a miserable time hitting it sideways and he could lose interest in the game. Besides, a fuller swing happens naturally through exercising the body and the enthusiasm that a good basic start provides.

Introducing the correct hand and wrist action is important too otherwise the elbows tend to bend

Get him into the habit of holding the finish position until the ball has landed as this will also help his balance as well as setting an example of good technique.

Finally, a cheeky tip If you have lessons yourself, take him along with you when you see the pro. Give him his club and let him hit a few balls around to keep him interested. The pro will probably takes an interest and correct your lad occasionally at no extra cost. Well, it's worth a try ...

Ok I'd like to book a lesson with you....oh and btw I'm bringing my 5 yr old too.
Now off to Ryanair.com to book a flight.
But seriously..his hands look so small..should I get him to use baseball grip at first?..and progress as his hands get stronger to inter-locking?

        Kids

Teaching kids is alot of fun. Don't over burden them with details of the game.

Distance - The main thing with kids under 8 try to get them to swing fast. Control will come later. When kids get older 8-10 they don't swing through. If they are taught at an early age, they will have distance as they get older.

Short game - Play games with them. Putting games are great, they may even beat you. Tell them you are equal on and around the green and they will concentrate more at their short game.

If you need some games to play let me know. My son is 11 and has been playing since age 8.
