    Re: who forward presses

I use a tiny forward press to start my swing in motion. It's something I'm trying after reading an article from a teacher I follow about adding that touch of dynamicism to the swing. (ie start the swing from motion rather than from being static).

I feel as though it help my rhythm.

it helps my rythm and it helps take the tension out for me. i do a bigger foward press with my irons to help promote a decending strike.

I don't. My hands are already setup properly forward of the ball position. Moving the hands prior to swing changes this position and can cause the face angle's setup postion to be different.

          hi all
i do i think it helps start my swing smooth and also puts my hands an inch more forward of the ball at address too.

            Re: who forward presses

it seems a fwd press changes my loft angle and my club face opens slightly, I used to do it as it was a trigger~starter for my swing but now I just set my hands fwd & think about my wrist cupping / cocking on the takeaway. ( sorry is it cupping or cocking on the take-away?)

Didn't the great Harvey Penick say that a golf swing is like swinging a pail of water? For a novice like me, the foward press is a wonderful TRIGGER to start the swing. I think it helps start the graceful weight shift. Any thoughts???

                Hi

I agree a trigger to start the swing is a good part of a pre-shot routine. I move my right knee in towards my left for a short distance, when I move it back it triggers my take away move

I am sure that each individual has a different idea to create a good start at takeaway. Jim Mclean talks about the forward press as an "essential", however, looking at Tiger at the weekend, he didnt do much pressing. I personally concentrate on the left hand starting the club back in the swing, which then allows me to get into a natural rhythm. Horses for courses

Adam, a forward press is a push of your hands towards the target just before the takeaway starts. The idea is to start a good tempo

                        Guys,

I say it's an individual thing. I know alot of things I read say most good players do it. It does not work for me. I'm comfortable without it. I guess I'm in the minority here. I concentrate on a slow backswing- one piece movement and concentrate on keeping my head still and down through the shot and most important to me is the followthrough after contact. If I do these things right I hit a good shot every time. My prior/ youth athletic ability takes care of the rest.

From a high hndcper I would say no. I haven't heard of this before, Of course I haven't been playing long, but I would agree with Greg that a press would get your hands out of position. But understand I would dress like a chicken if it would help my game.

this has been something I have incorperated into my swing, something I never did before. For me it gets me into a better rhythm, rather then starting my back swing from a static position. in my swing it starts a pendulum motion and alleviates some jerkiness. seems to keep myself in a better tempo because I had a tendency to jerk the club back too quick, but a smooth forward press seems to have helped eliminate that. I would be interested in hearing of the different ways people forward press, for me I just use my hands and a small hip shift so my weight actually goes onto my left side a little and then the back swing starts when my weight shifts back.
