  • Handicaps in USA

I heard that in America a player can go out for, say, 3 holes and if he is under his handicap he can get cut, even though he only played 3 holes, is this true?

    No

America's system is based upon the self reporting of ones scores.

My understanding is that it takes a players last 20 rounds and factors in the dificulty of the course (It's slope rating) then averages the 10 best scores to get your handicap. Also there are certain other rules like if you have 2 tournment scores under your handicap it moves your handicap down etc.

Now in certain club tournements etc. to prevent cheating they might have a handicap committee which can adjust a players handicap when playing on that course.

Because with the above system the handicap claimed is only good as the truthfulness of the player.

Three holes does not a stipulated round make.

I think he has to have played 3/4 of the course before he reports a score.
